Medical Records Specialist
Job Summary
The Medical Records Specialist is responsible for maintaining accurate, complete, and confidential patient medical records in compliance with federal, state, and organizational regulations. This role ensures timely processing, retrieval, and release of medical information while supporting clinical and administrative staff.
Key Responsibilities

Maintain, organize, and manage patient medical records (electronic and/or paper)

Ensure accuracy, completeness, and proper documentation of health records

Retrieve and release medical records in compliance with HIPAA and privacy regulations

Enter, update, and verify patient data in electronic health record (EHR) systems

Audit records for quality, consistency, and regulatory compliance

Respond to record requests from patients, providers, and authorized third parties

Collaborate with clinical and administrative staff to resolve documentation issues

Securely store, archive, and dispose of records according to retention policies
Qualifications Required:

High school diploma or equivalent

Experience working with medical records or health information systems

Knowledge of HIPAA and patient privacy regulations

Strong attention to detail and organizational skills

Basic computer proficiency and data entry skills
Preferred:

Associate’s degree in Health Information Management or related field

Experience with EHR systems (e.g., Epic, Cerner, Meditech)
-
RHIT or similar certification

Prior experience in a healthcare setting
