Medical Laboratory Technician or Medical Technologist
Laboratory Testing Personnel support physicians by conducting various tests for disease prevention, diagnosis, and treatment, adhering to specimen protocols, documenting results accurately, and notifying caregivers promptly. They identify and communicate abnormalities swiftly, calibrate instruments, troubleshoot problems, maintain detailed records, comply with policies, and ensure quality control rigorously.
Medical Laboratory Technician Requirements
Associate Degree (A.A.) or equivalent from two-year college or technical school accredited by NAACLS.
Certification as a Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT) with the American Society of Clinical Pathologists (ASCP), National Credentialing Agency for laboratory personnel (NCA) or American Medical Technologist (AMT).
Personnel receiving certification as a MLT after January 1, 2004 must recertify every three years. To obtain recertification from ASCP, NCA, or AMT, 36 points of approved continuing education over a period of three years must be documented and submitted to the certifying agency.
Medical Technologist Requirements
Bachelor's degree in Clinical Laboratory Science or Medical Technology from an accredited institution (NAACLS Certified) or Bachelor's degree with a major in biological or chemical sciences and completion of "approved laboratory experience" requirements for Medical Technologist certification as designated by the American Society of Clinical Pathologist, (ASCP), National Credentialing Agency for laboratory personnel (NCA) or American Medical Technologists (AMT).
Certification as a Medical Technologist (MT) or Clinical Laboratory Scientist (CLS) with the American Society of Clinical Pathologists (ASCP), National Credentialing Agency for laboratory personnel (NCA) or American Medical Technologists (AMT).

Six months or more of experience in a laboratory environment is preferred for either position.
