Maintenance Technician Apprentice - Full-time - AVALA Hospital
Summary
Under supervision of the director, superintendent or a qualified maintenance technician, the Maintenance Technician Apprentice assists the maintenance technicians with a wide variety of maintenance duties in order to provide a clean, orderly and safe environment; and perform related work as required.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
General Requirements
- -Assists with a variety of duties, including installing equipment, maintaining mechanical systems and repairing machines and other duties as assigned.
- -Assists with conducting Hazardous Conditions Survey monthly.
- -Receives and responds to Environment of Care Rounds/ Surveys when received.
- -Monitor facility for possible safety hazards.
- -Reports unsafe conditions immediately and takes responsibility to resolve quickly.
- -Responds promptly to requests for service or repair of facility equipment.
- -Performs work in a professional, timely manner to the benefit of AVALA customers.
Plumbing System
- -Assists with facilitating the Parish on inspection of water and drainage system for proper operation.
- -Assists with performing routine plumbing maintenance and repairs.
- -Assists with maintaining exterior drainage system.
- -Monitor sprinkler system to ensure it functions properly and notify vendor if necessary.
- -Understands/will learn functioning of hot water boiler system and service basics.
- -Understands/will learn requirements for shut off and isolation of water supply.
- -Assists with facilitating service work on natural gas service to facility.
Med Gas
- -Monitor/will learn all med gas and vacuum connections for proper function.
- -Replace empty tanks as needed.
- -Understands/will learn functioning of Bulk O2 and requests refill/ service when necessary.
- -Understands/will learn and properly interacts with Med Gas alarm system.
- -Assists with facilitating necessary bio med work on anesthesia equipment.
Electrical System and Lighting
- -Assists with performing routine system inspections of utility services as required.
- -Inspect light fixtures and components, change/ repair as required.
- -Assists with performing routine electrical repairs as required.
- -Assists with testing emergency lighting routinely.
- -Assists with Inspections and repairs of parking lot/ exterior lighting.
- -Routinely inspect generators for proper function.
- -Assists with monitoring and replenishing diesel supply for generators.
- -Assists with monitoring and records parameters of operation for the generators.
Special Systems
- -Understands/will learn Security systems such as card access, keypad locks and CCTV cameras.
- -Recognize/will learn basic Nurse Call functions and requests repair when necessary.
- -Understand/will learn and repair in house video/ cable and music system.
- -Assists with maintaining telephone systems.
Fire Protection
- -Assists with routinely inspecting fire extinguishers.
- -Understands/will learn to inspect kitchen hood/ fire suppression system.
- -Inspects and understands/will learn fire suppression and detection systems.
- -Ensures operation of systems during facility construction/ renovation work.
- -Assists/will learn how to conduct fire drills and train staff in fire safety as required.
Heating and Air Conditioning
- -Assists with facilitating with vendors to ensure inspections are complete on all belts and filters on maintenance schedule and change if necessary.
- -Assists with facilitating with the vendor to inspect all HVAC equipment for proper functioning.
- -Understand/will learn and utilize computerized HVAC control system.
- -Understand/will learn and initiate service work for main roof top chiller units.
- -Will learn the performing programming of thermostats.
Biomedical Equipment
- -Assists with facilitating with vendors to perform basic safety testing of new and existing equipment using analyzer(s).
- -Work with staff to identify and repair any biomedical equipment as required.
- -Removes defective equipment immediately and labels accordingly.
- -Assists with coordinating biomedical repairs with service vendor to insure timely repair of equipment.
- -Assists with coordinating shipping/ receiving of factory repairs of equipment with Materials Mgmt.
Interior of Facility
- -Perform repairs to equipment, fixtures, doors, office and kitchen equipment.
- -Maintain window integrity through inspection and repair.
- -Perform routine maintenance on interior finish details such as paint, moldings and wall fixtures.
- -Inspect all buildings, facilities and equipment for needed repairs and maintenance.
Exterior of Facility
- -Monitor lawn and landscaping for any visual changes and notify vendor as necessary.
- -Monitors and cleans exterior of building and parking lot as needed.
- -Monitor exterior lighting and notify vendor if repair as needed.
Construction and Renovation
- -Assists with coordinating construction related activities throughout the hospital.
- -Communicates to all departments affected by construction activities and plan accordingly.
- -Assists with developing a plan and perform in house renovation work as necessary.
- -Follow all Infection Control measures during construction and renovation.
Safety and Security
- -Utilize safe work practices whenever performing job tasks.
- -Follow all safety rules and regulations.
- -Attend staff/ department meetings and communicate concerns appropriately.
- -Will learn/trains and informs staff of security concerns and responds to security code alerts.
- -Will learn/plans and conducts fire, security and emergency preparedness drills.
- -Understands/will learn all Emergency Code functions as detailed in the policy and procedure manuals.
- -Maintains the secure access to the facility by checking and locking doors at the end of the business day.
Ancillary Duties
- -Assists
with the supervision of the Housekeeping Department when required.
- -Assists with maintaining and ordering supplies for the Maintenance Department.
- -Assists with maintaining and ordering supplies for the Housekeeping Department when required.
- -Assists with maintaining and ordering all linen for the facility.
- -Assists with coordinating the handling of all general and bio-hazardous waste.
- -Works with Material Management to send/ receive any large shipments/ deliveries.

Regulatory Requirements
- High School Diploma or Equivalent.
