SUMMARY
The Golf Course Mechanic will report to the Golf Course Superintendent and/or Assistant Golf Course Superintendent. This individual will be primarily responsible for overseeing the preventative maintenance program, including the repair of failing equipment, keeping records of parts and labor needed to maintain each piece of equipment, and placing orders for parts and supplies required for each repair or service.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Ability to inspect, diagnose, and repair mechanical defects/failures in various golf course maintenance equipment, including but not limited to diesel-, electric-, and gasoline-powered automobiles, trucks, trenchers, sweepers, rollers, mowers, and other mechanical equipment.
  • Instructs and trains golf course maintenance staff on proper cleaning and safe operation of equipment, as well as how to recognize and report maintenance issues.
  • Maintains a preventative maintenance program for all maintenance equipment, staying within the confines of the budget for repairs.
  • Keeps a complete set of records for equipment, including inventory of purchases, repair parts, and maintenance performed on each individual piece of machinery.
  • Conducts spot checks on equipment for performance and evaluates any repairs/services needed, making emergency repairs immediately or before further use.
  • Regulates golf course staff's use of equipment in the absence of the Superintendent/Assistant Superintendent if needed.
  • Oversees shop area maintenance, cleanliness, and safety.
  • Performs all other duties as assigned.

  • Working knowledge of light and heavy maintenance equipment and automotive apparatus.
  • Skill in the use of various repair tools, both mechanical and manual.
  • Working knowledge of the theory, care, and operation of internal combustion engines and mowing equipment.
  • Capacity to prioritize and multi-task in a busy environment, sometimes in inclement weather.
  • Ability to work independently in the absence of supervision with a focus on safety, including knowledge of the hazards and precautions of the profession.
  • Ability to read, comprehend, and follow oral/written instructions.
  • High attention to detail necessary to perform repetitive tasks with a focus on quality standards.
  • Clear, concise, and effective communication skills to gain the cooperation of team members, guests, and groups.
  • Knowledge of and/or ability to play the game of golf and understand how job performance affects course conditions.

EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE

  • High school diploma or GED equivalent required; vocational school training strongly preferred.
  • Minimum of five years of advanced experience in machine and vehicle repair/maintenance.
  • Broad base of mechanical/electrical knowledge and prior experience working with golf course equipment strongly desired.

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, AND REGISTRATIONS

  • Valid driver's license and an approved driving record authorized through the company's insurance provider required.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS/WORK ENVIRONMENT

  • Golf maintenance workers must be at least 18 years of age to operate equipment with moving parts.
  • Routine exposure to inclement weather, including hot weather and outdoor elements (sun, rain, dust, etc.) for extended periods.
  • Constant walking and/or riding through golf courses, including frequent standing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, or balancing.
  • Manual dexterity – ability to move hands, hands together with arms, and use both hands to quickly grasp or manipulate equipment.
  • Must regularly traverse, lift, or maneuver items up to 80 pounds.
  • Report to work as scheduled and on time for early morning shifts (including four-hour shifts on Saturday and Sunday) for a 40-hour workweek.
  • Flexibility to work evenings, weekends, and holidays is required, along with a willingness to adjust scheduled work hours based on business needs.
