The Professional Lifeguard is an essential member of the aquatics team and is tasked with both patron safety and facility maintenance. Lifeguards act as first responders in emergency situations and practice preventative lifeguarding. The candidate filling this role is tasked with opening the facility, checking and adjusting water temperature and chemistry, and monitoring lap swimmers during the early hours of the morning.

Job Requirements: 25-30 hours/week; includes early mornings, weekends

Qualifications:

  • Must be 18 years of age or older
  • Must present with a current Lifeguard/First Aid/CPR/AED certification from the American Red Cross, or be willing/able to obtain within first 90-days of employment

Knowledge & Skills:

  • Thorough knowledge and application of American Red Cross lifeguard rescue techniques and surveillance, CPR and AED
  • Excellence customer service skills
  • Excellent understanding, application, and enforcement of facility rules, policies, and procedures
  • Ability to maintain open communication among staff
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team
  • Ability to work with children, teens, and adults
  • Excellent decision-making skills

Responsibilities:

  • Open aquatics facility for daily operation
  • Monitor pools for patron safety and enforce rules and policies with the goal of accident prevention
  • Recognize and respond quickly and effectively to emergency situations following the YMCA Emergency Action Plan and American Red Cross lifeguard response training
  • Perform in-house tasks to maintain facility cleanliness and appearance
  • Complete incident and/or contamination reports as needed
  • Follow proper incident and/or contamination procedures before opening pools following an incident
  • Communicate suggestions, concerns, or required maintenance needs to the Aquatics Director
  • Fulfill requests of the Aquatics Direct and/or other aquatics and YMCA staff
  • Responsible for health and safety of members and staff during all aspects of aquatic programming and regular operating hours
  • Promotes all aquatic and YMCA Programs
