POSITION SUMMARY:

Under the direction of the Aquatics Director, Lifeguards are responsible for supervising the aquatics area to prevent accidents, assist swimmers, and respond to emergencies.  The incumbent will create a safe, enjoyable, and positive atmosphere that promotes member safety and satisfaction in accordance with the YMCA policies and procedures.  The Lifeguard will oversee multiple activities including open swim, water exercise, swim lessons, waterfront guarding at resident camp and lap swimming for 2 active pools and a lake.

Variety of morning, afternoon, evening, and weekend hours available.  To be eligible to work outdoors at Tourtellotte Pool or Camp Patterson, you must also work some indoor hours at the main YMCA Facility. 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  1. Maintain constant surveillance of the pool area, know/review all emergency procedures and respond to emergency situations immediately.
  2. Perform first aid when necessary and complete appropriate incident/accident reports.
  3. Knows, understands, and consistently applies safety rules, policies, and guidelines for the pools and aquatic area.
  4. Lifeguards must be able to perform arduous physical tasks necessary for a water rescue to the standards of lifeguard training.
  5. Inspect pool area daily for availability of rescue equipment, hazardous or unsafe conditions and report conditions to supervisor or maintenance department immediately.
  6. Keep aquatic facility clean, including picking up and putting away equipment as well as daily cleaning tasks.
  7. Assist in readying the pool for programs to begin and end on time. This includes performing tasks such as moving lane lines or putting handicap-accessible steps into the pool or removing them from the pool.
  8. Perform other tasks as assigned by the Aquatics Director.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  1. Minimum age of 15.
  2. Certifications: CPR, First Aid, and AED for the Professional Rescuer or YMCA lifeguard certification.
  3. Ability to concentrate for long periods of time.
  4. Ability to recognize swimmers who may need assistance.
  5. Demonstrated ability to recognize, respond, and remedy unsafe/hazardous situations.
  6. Ability to communicate with all ages and levels of swimmers.
  7. Ability to work with diverse groups of people.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

  1. Ability to pass lifeguard water test.
  2. Must be able to remain alert with no lapses of consciousness in a warm environment with air temperatures of 80 degrees or higher.
  3. Must be able to sit or stand for extended periods.
  4. Ability to hear noises and distress signals.
  5. Observe all areas of the pool with clear vision.
  6. Perform all needed rescues and survival skills.
  7. Be able to perform strenuous physical tasks necessary for a water rescue, including swimming quickly, supporting adult body weight while swimming as far as 50 feet, and removing adult body weight from the pool.
  8. Communicate verbally, including projecting voice across distance in normal and loud situations.
