A Licensed Physical Therapy Assistant (PTA) works under the direct supervision of a licensed Physical Therapist (PT) to implement treatment plans designed to improve patient mobility and manage pain.

Core Responsibilities

Direct Patient Care: Perform therapeutic exercises, gait and balance training, and manual techniques such as massage or stretching.

Modality Application: Administer physical agents including ultrasound, electrical stimulation, traction, and heat/cold therapies as prescribed.

Progress Monitoring: Observe patients before, during, and after therapy; document changes in status and report findings to the supervising PT.

Patient Education: Instruct patients and caregivers on proper techniques for at-home exercises, wellness protocols, and the use of assistive devices like walkers or canes.

Administrative Tasks: Maintain accurate electronic medical records (EMR) and ensure the treatment area is clean and equipment is sanitized.

Required Qualifications

Education: Associate degree from a physical therapist assistant program accredited by the Commission on Accreditation in Physical Therapy Education (CAPTE).

Licensure: Current state licensure or certification as a PTA.

Certification: Passing score on the National Physical Therapy Examination (NPTE) for PTAs and valid CPR/BLS certification.

Key Skills

Strong knowledge of anatomy, physiology, and rehabilitation techniques.

Excellent interpersonal and communication skills to build patient rapport.

Ability to handle multiple tasks and adapt to changing clinical environments.
