Library Clerk (Full Time and Part Time Positions available)
St. James Parish Government is hiring a Library Clerk under the Operations Department.
JOB FUNCTION: This qualified candidate will be assisting in the public services aspect of the library but may also support with processing library materials. This is a non-essential, non-exempt position and normally works forty hours per week. Individuals in this position should be able to complete the majority of their work with a minimum amount of supervision. This person may work until 6:00pm and will be expected to work some Saturdays.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Includes any combination of the following illustrative examples of duties and responsibilities (and other duties as assigned.)
· Must be able to use the computer to perform various duties such as checking materials in and out, editing records, search for materials, etc.
· Must be able to assist patrons with various requests for assistance
· Must be able to shelve library materials in their proper places and be familiar with the ordering of books and the Dewey Decimal system
· Must be able to process library materials i.e. property stamps, bar codes, implanting the security tags, spine labels, book covers, etc.
· Must be able to drive the bookmobile or participate in bookmobile services to the public i.e. book selection, checking materials in and out, delivery, etc.
· Other duties and projects as assigned

EDUCATION AND/ OR EXPERIENCE: Must be a high school graduate. A working knowledge of libraries is preferred with the ability to learn library terminology, techniques, and mandatory procedures.
MATHEMATICAL SKILLS: This person must be able to add, subtract, multiply, and divide using whole numbers. The person who fills this position must be able to make change, calculate fines, and compile statistical reports.
REASONING ABILITY: Ability to define common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form. Ability to interpret library rules and regulations.
OTHER SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
· The ability to perform basic office procedures such as filing
· Ability to use basic office equipment such as typewriters, adding machines, computers with basic Microsoft Office knowledge, and the navigation of the internet
· Must be able to provide transportation to and from work, run errands when necessary, and be comfortable traveling to library-sponsored workshops that may require overnight stays
PHYSICAL DEMANDS: The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. Reasonable accommodations will be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.
This job involves equal parts of standing and sitting. While performing this job, the employee must be able to climb a ladder and retrieve materials from shelves approximately seven feet from the ground. They must be able to bend to retrieve library materials from the bottom shelf on the ground level. Some library materials weigh up to 15 or 20 pounds per item. Must be able to push or pull a loaded book cart that weighs approximately 60 pounds. Sometimes moving equipment such as computers and furniture will be expected. In addition, the lifting and packing of books in boxes or bags for mailing or delivery is expected.
WORK ENVIRONMENT: The work environment for this position is primarily inside located at the Lutcher or Vacherie location. It involves providing services to large groups at a time and quickly helping one patron after the other. It will involve patrolling the library and implementing the library’s policies for behavior and electronic access. On occasion, the employee will be asked to assist the patron in finding information that the employee personally may find offensive or morally wrong.
The St. James Parish Library operates in a dynamic work environment. Services and hours of operation are ever changing and when necessary, work schedules and job descriptions may change.
