Learning Specialist for the Middle and Upper Schools

Position Description

A ten-month position, the learning specialist works with Middle and Upper School students with diagnosed learning differences and/or academic difficulties by providing support with learning strategies, organization, executive functioning, and study skills; providing individual and small group instruction as appropriate; serving as a resource and instructional coach for middle and upper school faculty; and as a resource for the greater St. Martin’s school community.

Required Qualifications, Knowledge And Skills

> BA in Education (Masters preferred) with Special Education specialization

> Experience with and knowledge of current understandings about individualized education plans and services in an independent school, and learning disability intervention

> Understanding of psycho-educational development of students in grades 5 -12

> A minimum of five years of experience as a learning specialist or teacher. Independent school experience preferred.

> Familiarity with legal responsibilities of independent schools related to IEP and 504 plans.

> Proficiency with various uses of technology.

> Ability to collaborate with faculty, staff, administration, and parents.

> Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.

> Ability to communicate clearly and effectively, verbally and in writing

> Physically able to perform essential functions in a variety of settings

Principal Duties And Responsibilities

1. Work with the Division Heads, Academic Dean, and School Counselor to identify Middle and Upper School students requiring assistance or experiencing academic difficulty.

2. Coordinate and manage learning support programs for Middle and Upper School students.

3. Provide support/instruction for students with learning strategies, organization, executive functioning, and study skills

4. Assess student achievement and academic progress

5. Report regularly on student achievement and progress.

6. Schedule, facilitate, and/or attend parent and faculty conferences to discuss student progress.

7. Read and summarize psycho-educational evaluations for Upper and Middle School students.

8. Develop in-service workshops to educate faculty about learning styles, curriculum strategies, and the program for working with students.

9. Work with and through Division Heads to identify students in need of academic support.

10. Write Student Learning Plans that will target students’ specific curricular/learning needs.

11. Counsel families on learning support services.

12. Coordinates and schedules student standardized testing

13. Provide resources, direct assistance, coaching, and training to enable faculty to better meet the needs of all learners.

14. Develop and maintain communication and documentation protocols related to learning support.

15. Assume an active role in Student Support Team (SST) meetings.

16. Support the admissions and enrollment process as related to students with learning differences as appropriate.

17. Serve on the Admission Committee

18. Perform other duties as determined by the Head of School.

Physical Requirements and Work Environment:

> Regularly work in standard office or classroom conditions and climate

> Regularly use close and distance vision, including working at a computer screen for extended periods of time; ability to observe students from various distances.

> Frequently required to move around the office/classroom; work at a desk for extended periods of time

> Ability to occasionally move items weighing up to 20 lbs. across the campus/classroom/office

> Ability to periodically support before and after-school or weekend events

> Ability to maintain appropriate boundaries with students, fellow staff, and community members
