LANDS AND RESOURCES COORDINATOR

          Inuvik F/T (37.5 hours per week)

Responsible for supporting projects related to the protection of the Gwich’in Settlement Region (GSR) natural environment by ensuring compliance with the Gwich’in Comprehensive Land Claim Agreement (GCLCA), licenses, permit conditions, relevant legislation, regulations, directives, policies, and procedures for the Gwich’in Tribal Council (GTC).

CORE RESPONSIBILITIES

The Core Responsibilities of this position include, but are not limited to:

·         Acts as a resource and liaise with external organizations regarding all requests to the GTC for activities proposed in the GSR and in relation to land and resource management matters.

·         Prepares written submissions, coordinates internal feedback and conducts required research in order to express the GTC's position to stakeholders.

·         Manages the virtual management system, the cabin registration process and the administration of the land use permit process, requiring collaboration with other departments.

·         Provides strategic advice and recommendations in the development, review, implementation, and evaluation of strategic initiatives, policies, land control guidelines, and procedures that guide land and resource management within the GRA.

·         Provides guidance, direction, and technical expertise on legislation, policies and agreements that may have an impact on the Gwich’in Settlement Region.

·         Establishes and maintains a geo-referenced database of maps to support identification, evaluation, and establishment of the GSA for land use plans, water use plans, conservation planning and other land management processes.

·         Organization – strong organizational, analytical and time management skills along with an ability to set priorities and manage complex, multiple and long-term tasks. Excellent attention to detail, ensuring accuracy in all documentation and all records are maintained securely for legal, fiscal, operational and historical purposes.

·         Problem Solving – ability to identify and evaluate alternatives, to think creatively and to recommend innovative solutions. 

·         Confidentiality – maintenance of confidentiality and handling of sensitive information related to intellectual property.

·         Logistics – ability to work in a cross-cultural environment and work flexible hours. Some work on evenings and weekends may be required. 

QUALIFICATIONS

       The qualifications required for this position include:

·         A Degree or Diploma in Environmental Science, Renewable Resource Planning, or a related field would be an asset.

·         A minimum of three (3) years’ related work experience preferred.

·         Hands-on experience in environment assessment and an understanding of environmental and resource management issues in the Arctic.

·         Experience working with Indigenous people on collaborative and/or multi-disciplinary programs would be considered an asset.  

 

      The qualifications desired for this position also include:

·         Knowledge of the Gwich’in Comprehensive Land Claim Agreement;

·         Fluency in the Gwich’in language; and,

·         Experience in in the public or Indigenous sectors, ideally in a cross-cultural setting and northern context.

 

COMPENSATION

A competitive compensation plan will accompany the successful candidate including a comprehensive benefit plan.

Preference may be given to candidates who are Gwich'in Participants and have experience working in the non-profit or public sectors or in an Indigenous Government/Organization, preferably in a northern context.
