We are currently recruiting a Journeyperson Carpenter & Maintenance Technician for our team in Churchill, Manitoba! This is a full-time term position from May 6 - September 20, 2024.

POSITION SUMMARY     

The Journeyperson Carpenter and Maintenance Technician (Carpenter) is responsible for leading and performing skilled/semi-skilled carpentry work to complete construction, maintenance, and repair projects for staff houses and facilities at Frontiers North. This role involves interpreting blueprints and specifications, creating project plans, estimating material requirements, and ensuring compliance with building codes and safety regulations. The Carpenter coordinates with multiple trades, maintains inventory levels, operates specialized equipment and tools, and performs regular maintenance on equipment. Additionally, fostering a collaborative and inclusive work environment, adhering to workplace health and safety standards, and supporting the organization’s values and commitment to sustainability are essential aspects of this role.

SPECIFIC KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

  • Completion of a carpentry apprenticeship program, and/or Red Seal/Journeyperson Certification, or an acceptable combination of education and experience.
  • 5+ years’ experience in carpentry and general construction in the residential construction industry.
  • Valid Class 5 (standard) driver’s license is required.
  • The ability to obtain a valid Class 4 (buses up to 24 passengers) is required; possession of a valid Class 4 licence is an asset. 
  • Excellent carpentry and general construction skills are required.
  • Ability to read and interpret blueprints and technical specifications.
  • Ability to estimate labour and material needs and costs.
  • Knowledge of the Manitoba Building Code and the Manitoba Workplace Safety and Health Act and Regulations as they pertain to the residential construction industry is required.
  • Ability to organize and maintain complex activities and multi-faceted projects and handle multiple tasks concurrently.
  • Ability to develop mutually beneficial lasting relationships with coworkers and external stakeholders.
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills in English; other languages are an asset.
  • Demonstrated ability to use a computer, including Mac operating systems, Google Workspace, Microsoft Office, Internet, and server databases.
  • Must be able to work individually and as part of a team.

SPECIAL CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT

  • Remote, northern community accessible only by train and plane.
  • Mix of office, facilities, and outdoor environment; working at heights and in confined spaces.
  • Working with hand and power tools and construction equipment and machinery is required;
  • The ability to travel to/from Winnipeg and Churchill Manitoba and other locations by air, vehicle, and/or train is required (<1%).
  • The ability to safely lift up to 50 pounds (22.68 kilograms), stand for extended periods of times, bend at the waist, crouch and kneel, reach overhead, safely climb a ladder, and walk over uneven surfaces is required. 
  • Tools will be provided.
  • Must remain free of impairment from drugs, alcohol, or other mental and physical conditions while on duty and/or on call to work.
  • CSA approved, steel-toed work boots with ankle protection are required to be worn while on job sites.
  • Staff housing is available.
  • Overtime is required during evenings, weekends, and on holidays, especially during peak seasons.
  • Must be legally entitled to work in Canada.
