The opportunity:

EfficiencyOne is looking for several Industrial Energy Managers to fill several open positions on our Engineering and Planning team. The IEM- Industrial Energy Manager will provide energy management services to Nova Scotian industrial facility operations and other technical support as EfficiencyOne directs. Reporting to the EfficiencyOne IEM Senior Energy Manager, the IEM will provide technical support to industrial facilities, which will involve working with their facilities’ staff, engineering, production teams, and management to promote energy efficiency and environmental stewardship. This role requires regular time on-site. (Sites are in Nova Scotia)

  • Communication and Business Development

       o Lead ongoing informal client discovery sessions, identify energy savings opportunities and upcoming projects to develop                         business cases. Business cases will recommend projects, measures, and incentive programs to clients that align with                            their objectives.

      o Support key stakeholders in energy management planning. Support implementation of energy efficiency projects and                           influence policy through developing an understanding of the organization’s budgetary, procurement, and production                               policies related to energy management.

      o Deliver presentations and generate reports as required by clients and EfficiencyOne regarding outlining project status,                             energy management opportunities, and achievements to date.

  • Engineering Data Analysis

       o Utilizing available production information and other energy data to track energy usage and identify energy-saving                                     opportunities.

      o  Supporting the implementation of production controls and equipment changes that result in energy savings through                             developing an understanding of the mechanical and electrical systems within client facilities.

      o  Complete technical audits, evaluate energy efficiency technologies, perform feasibility studies.

  • Project Management

      o Responsible for coordinating and administering EfficiencyOne project documentation, incentive applications, and project                       development agreements.

      o Act as project manager for all energy-related capital projects, including liaison to energy service consultants, contractors,                        and manufacturers.

     o Responsible for supporting the development of energy efficiency projects and initiatives prioritized by plant management.

  • Travelling to Client Sites

      o   This role requires a minimum of one or two weekly in-person client site visits total. This may change at the discretion of the                   energy manager and/or clients depending on collaboration requirements needed to meet objectives. 


What Will Help You Succeed?

  • A bachelor’s degree in engineering, Engineering Technologist Diploma, or equivalent combination of education and work experience.
  • Experience working in an industrial environment.
  • Minimum five years of related experience developing business cases, creating project scopes of work, and leading client discovery sessions. The ideal candidate will have strong interpersonal and time management skills and excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Minimum five years of related experience in an energy-related role with experience developing and implementing energy management programs and/or energy savings projects.
  • Practical knowledge applicable to a manufacturing environment, including knowledge of energy efficiency measures specific to production.
  • Demonstrate the ability to interpret electrical and mechanical plans and specifications for facilities.
  • Proficient with all Microsoft Office software (Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Outlook, Teams)
  • Must have a valid driver’s license and access to a vehicle.
  • Designation as a Certified Energy Manager (CEM) and Certified Measurement and Verification Professional (CMVP) is considered an asset.

In the first week, expect to:

  • Meet with the Senior EM and Services team.
  • Develop a high-level plan for the first 180 days in your role as an Energy Manager and
  • Be prepared to read! EM service manual, business program manuals, protocols on measurement and verification, energy auditing guidelines, example reports from Senior Energy Managers, and examples of other organizations’ energy management plans. Ensuring you are familiar with technical resources and reference material is critical to executing your short-term plan on-site.

In the first month, expect to:

  • Become familiar with the people and organizations within the participant organizations. Organizational awareness includes understanding the people who influence projects and are familiar with the facilities and processes, such as procurement, budget planning, etc.
  • Review ISO 50001 – Energy Management Systems and apply it to your present and future planning.
  • Meet with Efficiency NS Program Managers to better understand project incentives and program processes.
  • Meet with Senior Energy Managers to bounce ideas around on strategies and tactics that will increase your influence and impact on the account organization and
  • Meet with the consultant network to explore their services that could benefit your account.

In the first three months, expect to:

  • Establish monitoring, tracking, and reporting for your account. These are critical for Efficiency NS and for creating visibility within your accounts.
  • On-site energy audits – identify technologies and efficiency solutions.
  • Create business cases for projects working with contractors, consultants, and account staff.
  • Build a master list of energy efficiency measures and
  • Develop a framework for your account’s Energy Management Plan, which is a living document. This plan is a roadmap for your work as an energy manager and for organizations on their path toward corporate / government environmental and economic targets.
