Position Summary:
Veterans Engineering is seeking a qualified HVAC Technician to support ongoing facility operations at the Palo Alto VAMC. The technician will be responsible for maintaining, repairing, and installing critical HVAC systems throughout the hospital, ensuring optimal climate control and patient comfort.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Minimum 4 years of journeyman-level experience with industrial HVAC systems
- Current state driver’s license (must be submitted with application)
- Proof of current residence (required)
- Ability to pass background check and adhere to VA compliance standards
Key Responsibilities:
- Perform diagnostics, preventative maintenance, and emergency repairs on HVAC units and systems
- Interpret and apply complex blueprints, wiring diagrams, and manufacturers’ manuals
- Install and balance climatic units across various hospital areas
- Maintain calibration of critical systems (e.g., chillers, freezers, food carts, solar-interlocked units)
- Respond immediately to malfunctions in vital equipment
- Work independently or with teams in confined or elevated spaces (e.g., rooftops, tunnels, penthouses)
Skills and Knowledge:
- Skilled in fabricating ductwork, pipe sizing, and electronic meter use
- Familiarity with OSHA and VA safety regulations and trade practices
- Experience operating service vehicles (pickup trucks, vans, etc.)
- Comfortable working in noisy, hot, cold, or confined environments
- Proficient in shop mathematics and interpreting technical documents
Physical Requirements:
- Ability to lift up to 100 lbs
- Must be able to climb, kneel, crawl, and work in elevated or tight areas
- Work performed indoors/outdoors in extreme temperatures, dusty, or high-noise conditions
