General Summary: The HVAC Technician ensures that the Zoo facilities, grounds and equipment are safe and functional. This person will be skilled in performing preventative maintenance on all HVAC systems on grounds at the Zoo. This position supports the Zoo to achieve its animal care, conservation, sustainability, education, and DEAI goals.

Essential Functions:

Primary Functions:

  • Perform all preventative maintenance on HVAC equipment at the Zoo.
  • Change air filters.
  • Clean condenser coils.
  • Clean condensate lines.
  • Test for safe and proper operation of equipment.
  • Clean HVAC components such as blowers, coils, filters and grills.
  • Identify maintenance risks on equipment.
  • Repair or replace worn or defective parts.
  • Troubleshoot and take corrective action for major malfunction and breakdowns.
  • Perform all tasks in compliance with company policy and safety guidelines.
  • Document and log all work performed
  • Perform other tasks and projects as assigned.

Communication

  • Effectively communicate the status of work, supplies needed, or any challenges/issues

Minimum Qualifications:

Education:

  • High School diploma or equivalent.
  • 5+ years of experience working in building operations or HVAC maintenance.

Experience/Training:

  • Valid HVAC Certification
  • Valid CFC Certification
  • Valid driver’s license a must.

Traits Desirable:

  • Mechanical aptitude.
  • Must be team-oriented.
  • Ability to work with a wide variety of individuals from ethnic, cultural and economic backgrounds.

Equipment:

  • Must be able to operate a variety of machines, power tools, hand tools, and equipment including computer, telephone, two-way radio, and golf cart, etc.

Working Conditions:

  • Must be able to exert up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, 25 pounds frequently and/or a negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects.  Physical demands are in excess of those for sedentary work; must be able to remain on feet for periods of time, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, push, pull, climb, balance;
  • Must be able to stand and remain active for an eight-hour shift;
  • Must be able to walk large areas of the Zoo as needed;
  • Must be able to work in an outdoor weather environment in all seasons and weather, including heat/humidity, cold temperatures, snow and ice, and/or wet conditions;
  • Ability to work a flexible schedule to include weekends, holidays, special events, and to assist with emergencies as needed;
  • Exposure to zoonotic diseases and risk of animal attack.
