Housing Support Team Lead - Meares

Victoria, BC Full-time $32.39-$34.37/hour

Beacon is hiring for a brand-new purpose-built low-barrier supportive housing facility for youth participants aged 19-27.  The Meares building provides wraparound 24/7 support for 48 participants who are precariously housed or experiencing homelessness. 

The goal of Meares is to use a collaborative, strength-based perspective that recognizes the individual skills, talents, and needs of our residents. In collaboration with community resources, Meares will provide life and living skills, two meals a day and a safe and welcoming environment to help give youth a stable home.  

We seek passionate, community-minded individuals to join our team and set the foundation for youth to enter self-sustainable, independent housing when it is their time to exit the program.

Full-time night shift: Thursday, Friday, Saturday 6:45 pm-6:45 am - with bi-weekly alternating Wednesdays

POSITION SUMMARY: 

Reporting to the Manager of Meares Street, the Team Lead uses their leadership skills to foster a positive and professional work environment. They support the Housing Support Staff and the Meares Manager by facilitating regular 1 on 1 debriefs and making critical decisions around youth support. The Team Lead role models healthy team dynamics while building positive relationships with community resources.  PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:  

  • Providing senior-level support to the team including the resolution of difficult/complex relational issues 
  • Debriefing of critical incidents with staff and youth 
  • Support all daily operations of Meares St. Supportive Housing. 
  • Create and maintain professional relationships with the participants, community, and all stakeholders. 
  • Be familiar with, build and maintain positive relationships with appropriate community resources. 
  • Be a first response to crisis intervention as required
  • Clean rooms with participants as needed, wearing appropriate PPE. This can include dealing with human wastes, blood, sharps, and other paraphernalia 
  • Inform the management team regarding the development of programming appropriate for youth, and support programming when needed 
  • Provide information needed for management to complete necessary statistics and reporting 
  • Give appropriate mentorship and guidance to Housing Support Staff throughout the shift 
  • Encourage team building and positive dynamics within shift groups and overall staff team 
  • Assign shift tasks and ensure that the appropriate staff completes all tasks on time 
  • Direct staff support for participants and motivate staff to provide appropriate and trauma-informed care 
  • Support student practicums 
  • Support management with issues like breaches of the program agreement, including follow-up 
  • Be aware of critical incident report procedures and follow all health and safety policies and procedures 
  • Role model exemplary staff relational behaviour, communication and professional boundaries 
  • Perform other relevant job duties as assigned 

 QUALIFICATIONS and EXPERIENCE:  

  • Minimum one (1) year supervisory experience, with a preference for working with vulnerable populations 
  • Minimum of three (3) years of recent experience working with vulnerable populations 
  • A degree or diploma in a related field, or a combination of experience, education and lived experience 
  • Strong knowledge of harm reduction, client-centred theory and practice 
  • Demonstrated knowledge of the impacts of addiction, mental health, homelessness and poverty 
  • Knowledge of the psychosocial rehabilitation model

  • Ability to maintain a positive and professional attitude in challenging situations 
  • Demonstrated ability to work with individuals who have multiple barriers to stable housing 
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and be part of an integrated team 
  • Ability to use sound judgement while working in demanding conditions and circumstances  
  • Ability to kneel to the ground to attend to overdoses and other medical emergencies
  • Physical ability to lift 30lbs, walk up and down 6 flights of stairs and be on feet for a substantial time during shifts
  • Ability to work in building with active substance use 
  • Comfortable working in a pet-friendly environment.
