TITLE: Skabe

LOCATION: 661 Main Street 

DEPARTMENT: Indigenous Relations

REPORTS TO: Manager of Indigenous Relations

DIRECT REPORTS: None


KEY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

• Expand our Community Members knowledge in areas of indigenous cultural and practice including but not limited to smudging, crafts, and medicine harvesting.

• Share knowledge of the 7 sacred teachings and holding self to those practices.

• Assist all Elders, Medicine People and Knowledge Keepers when needed. The carrying, transporting and setup of all ceremony events.  Cleaning and disposing of Smudge Ashes as culturally approved.

• Creating relationships with Community Members who access services through Main Street Project. 

(E.g. Engage with community members by asking the questions: 1. What is your spirit name? 2. What community are you from? 3. Who is your family? )

• Assist Community Members to connect with the Case Management team when appropriate, using standard MSP Practices

• Reinforce relationships between community members and MSP staff. 

• Actively dismantle and diminish racism, misconceptions, homophobia and stereotypes against any person or group of persons. 

• Complete all daily documents including Daily Path Walked and Incident Reports. 

• Keep track of daily hours using Payworks 

• Continually learn cultural practices, remain open to other teachings

• Respect others gifts and teachings

• Adhere to Main Street Project policies and procedures. 

• Adhere with Personal Health Information act and the Federal Personal Information and Electronic Documents Act.

• Represent Main Street Project professionally and competently. 


SKILLS & SPECIFICATIONS

• Ability to professionally communicate with diverse individuals. 

• Motivated, self-starting, detail oriented and exceptional organization and time management skills. 

• A people-person, team player that willingly and enthusiastically provides support and mentorship as a Skabe.

• Ability to work collaboratively in an interdisciplinary setting

• Ability to handle highly confidential material and matters professionally.


EDUCATION & QUALIFICATIONS

• Knowledge of Indigenous culture

• Actively engaged in cultural practices and worked with people experiencing homelessness. 

• Have similar roles and or lived experience in areas of Homelessness and Indigenous practices.

• Awareness of the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples

• Awareness of the Truth and Reconciliation report 

• Awareness of the Missing and Murdered Women and Girls report

• Ability to apply Harm Reduction and Housing First philosophies in day-to-day work and interactions.

• Knowledge of the effects of poverty and the detriments of health

• Satisfactory Criminal Record with clear Vulnerable Sector Search, and a clear Adult Abuse Registry Check required. 

• First Aid and CPR Level “C”

• Driver’s License is considered an asset
