Home Support Worker - Ellis Place
CMHA Kelowna is hiring a Home Support Worker (HSW) for our Ellis Place Supportive Housing program. This position is a full-time, 40 hours per week Sunday to Thursday, 10:00am – 6:00pm.
WHO IS A HOME SUPPORT WORKER?
The Home Support Worker (HSW) provides in-unit assistance and supports basic life skills training to housing program participants. HSWs help ensure tenant rooms meet health and safety requirements by providing home support services to tenants such as housekeeping and laundry. Along with Supportive Housing Workers, the HSW will engage in wellness checks and participate in monthly suite inspections.
WHAT DOES A HOME SUPPORT WORKER DO?
- Provides life skills training such as housekeeping, and personal self-management skills
- Performs in-unit housekeeping duties such as sweeping and mopping floors, vacuuming, dusting, washing dishes, and laundry
- Provides feedback and input regarding participant’s needs and progress to the Team Lead and other involved community professionals
- Participates in and oversees various participant -focused social and recreational activities
- Identifies available social, economic, recreational, and educational services and resources in the community that will meet participant needs and facilitates referrals
- Recognize and respond to potential emergency situations such as crisis response, mental health and substance use, suicidal ideation, homicidal ideation to ensure the safety of participant and staff
- Manages crises, including providing timely response in providing CPR and Naloxone as part of overdose response
- Completes and maintains electronic records and documentation including case related documentation and progress reports
- Performs other related duties as assigned
YOUR STRENGTHS & EXPERIENCE:
- Grade 12 or equivalent education required
- Clear Criminal Record Check in the vulnerable sector
- Diploma in Human Services or related field considered an asset
- Certificates in First Aid, CPR, Naloxone and Food Safe considered an asset
- Experience working in a Supportive Housing environment or Community Social Service sector considered an asset
- Ability to be regularly exposed to individuals who are struggling with and/or recovering from trauma, drug/alcohol use, homelessness, mental health challenges and/or mental illness
- Ability to engage respectfully and develop rapport with program participants with multiple barriers
- Ability to work in cooperation with team members and independently
- Understanding of and commitment to working with people experiencing mental health concerns and substance use
- Working knowledge of community-based resources
- Ability to maintain consistent professional boundaries
- Understanding of Microsoft Outlook, Word and Excel
- Understanding of working with a Trauma Informed lens
- Understanding of Harm Reduction and Housing First principles
- Ability to organize and prioritize competing program and participant needs
- Strong attention to detail for documenting participant logs and critical incidents
- Ability to recognize changes in participants, analyze and resolve challenges
- Problem-solving and crisis intervention skills to resolve participant conflicts
