 Your Responsibilities and Duties as a Heavy Civil Estimator:

  • Review bid proposals
  • Follows up with subcontractors to ensure that bids are received
  • Provide preliminary estimate for bond
  • Provide scope invitations to vendors and subcontractors (min 3 per discipline)
  • Comprehensive take off of plans
  • Provide summary of minority goal requirements
  • Evaluates project specifications and drawings
  • Works closely with the project management and construction teams
  • Tracks as-builds and coordinates Municipal sign offs to obtain performance and payment bond releases from public agencies as soon as work is complete.
  • Establishes and maintain respectful and cooperative work relationships with co-workers, field personnel, sub-contractors, architects, owners, general contractors and other business associates.
  • Maintains status of plan reproduction
  • Solicits and maintains communication with sub-contractors and vendors
  • Transmits addenda and other bid information to sub-contractors
  • Prepares sub-contractor bid packages and Request for Proposals (RFPs)
  • Ensures that there is proper coverage from sub-contractors on bid day
  • Submits 100% of bids and budgets by the bid deadline
  • Responsible for ensuring that all quantity surveys and pricing are accurate and complete
  • Compiles lists of type of materials or equipment requirements, utilizing knowledge of services to be performed, or type of structure to be built using blueprints and specifications
  • Itemizes tools, fixtures, or equipment to be manufactured by company or purchased from outside sources
  • Computes cost estimates for materials, purchased equipment, subcontracted work, production activities and requirements, and labor
  • Follows professional work practices, company policies, procedures and guidelines
  • Demonstrates sound judgment and meet work commitments
  • Properly turns over bid document information to Project Management in a timely manner
  • Reviews drawings with Project Management team and highlight areas of concern
  • Reviews job costs with Project Management team and highlights any subs/material vendors that still need to be awarded
  • Seeks and qualifies new subcontractors
  • Ensures that Subs are aware of (and commit to) the project schedule
  • Provides cost/ benefit analysis of building systems and provide value engineering input during the estimating process
  • Accomplishes all tasks as appropriately assigned or requested
  • Other duties as assigned

Your Qualifications and Skills:

  • Minimum 5 years commercial construction estimating experience
  • Candidates with a degree in Construction Management may be given preference
  • Excellent computer skills, including Primavera or Microsoft Projects, MS-Excel, Word and Outlook
  • Candidates must have strong time management and organizational skills with an extreme attention to detail
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills are required
  • Proficient in blueprint reading
  • Experience with high density wood (wood frame construction)
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment
  • Ability to become familiarized with design documents, write scopes of work for all divisions of work, and assemble competitive estimates
  • Ability to effectively manage daily work output, meet bid deadlines, and work in a fast paced environment
  • Ability to represent the company on pre-bid job walks, ask pertinent questions, and relay site visit information to other team members and trade-contractors as required.
  • Ability to orchestrate and manage trade-contractor site visits
  • Ability to analyze trade-contractor estimates for scope accuracy and completeness
  • Ability to perform accurate quantity take offs
  • Ability to compile and update historical cost data for use in conceptual or rough order of magnitude estimates
