Health and Safety Specialist

About the Job: 

The Health & Safety Specialist is responsible for the Health & Safety program for the organization and oversees the execution of WSIB claims management. The Health & Safety Specialist works closely with all employees to create and foster a safe working environment. This is an onsite position with travel to local facilities. 

Key Responsibilities:

  •  Establish and maintain the Health and Safety program, plans, policies, and procedures.
  •  Manage and organize the Joint Health & Safety Committee including the scheduling of quarterly meetings.
  • Conduct and maintain monthly inspections and records.
  • Ensure Health & Safety Board is compliant and update as necessary.
  • Own and manage the Train the Trainer program which includes being an active participant in the program.
  • Maintenance of SDS and ensure they are valid and kept up to date.
  • Maintain health and safety equipment on site including PPE, fire extinguishers, first aid kits, etc.
  • Prepare maintenance audits on all safety equipment.
  • Prepare safety training materials including creating SOPs on all equipment including lift trucks and hand tools.
  • Coordinating and conducting safety orientation with all new hires
  • Ensure compliance with all relevant legal bodies such as Employment Standards, Ontario Health and Safety Act, Ministry of Labour, Labour Board and Human Rights Code.
  • Responsible for ensuring the completion of all Health & Safety training
  • Maintain training matrix and proactively coordinate training ensuring certifications do not expire.
  • Prepare and maintain employee training records.
  • Complete and submit monthly and annual WCB remittance reconciliation.
  • Prepare and maintain incident reports and communicate to WSIB on all injuries.
  • Manage the Return to Work process including working closely with managers, employees, & doctors to ensure staff are provided with modified duties and return to work as soon as reasonably possible.
  • Participates in other HR related activities as assigned within the team.

What you will bring:

  • Post Secondary education in Occupational Health and Safety or a related in discipline is required.
  • Minimum of 2-3 years of progressive related experience in Health & Safety preferably in production/manufacturing environment.
  • JHSC certified
  • CRSP certification preferred
  • Solid understanding of relevant legislation, including Ontario Occupational Health & Safety Act and Workplace Safety and Insurance Act.
  • Strong track record of accuracy and attention to detail
  • Highly self motivated and directed as position requires initiative and independent thinking
  • Business acumen with the ability to work effectively with all levels in the organization.
  • Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written
  • Excellent interpersonal and organizational skills
