JOB SUMMARY
The Gym Assistant supports the daily operations of a multi-purpose gymnasium within the Parks and Recreation Department. This facility hosts a wide range of recreational activities including youth and adult sports leagues, fitness classes, open gym sessions, and community events. The Gym Assistant ensures the gymnasium is clean, safe, and properly equipped, while providing courteous and professional assistance to patrons. This role contributes to the success of recreational programming by maintaining facility standards, enforcing rules, and fostering a welcoming environment for all participants.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
• Monitor gymnasium activities to ensure safety and compliance with facility rules.
• Assist with setup and breakdown of equipment for various programs and events.
• Perform routine cleaning and maintenance of gym equipment and surfaces.
• Provide customer service to patrons, answering questions and resolving minor issues.
• Report facility or equipment concerns to supervisory staff promptly.
• Support recreation staff during scheduled programs and special events.
• Maintain accurate records of attendance, incidents, and equipment usage as needed.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS
• High school diploma or GED required.
• Prior experience in recreation, athletics, or facility operations preferred.
• CPR/First Aid certification (or willingness to obtain upon hire).
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
• Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
• Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
• Basic knowledge of sports and athletic equipment.
• Ability to follow safety protocols and enforce rules diplomatically.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
• Must be available to work evenings, weekends, and holidays as scheduled.
• Must pass background check and drug screening.
PHYSICAL AND DEXTERITY REQUIREMENTS (with or without accommodation)
• Ability to lift and move equipment up to 50 lbs.

• Ability to visually monitor activities and hear verbal instructions or alarms.
• Vision: Ability to see and read program materials, signage, and written reports; ability to observe participants and ensure safety during activities.
• Hearing: Ability to hear and respond to communication via radio, beeper, or cell phone; ability to monitor sounds in the environment
(e.g., participant calls for help, safety alarms, or disturbances).
• Speech: Ability to communicate clearly and effectively with staff, participants, and the public, both in person and via radio or phone.
• Smell: Ability to detect unusual or hazardous odors, such as gas leaks, smoke, or the need for cleaning/restroom maintenance.
• Touch: Ability to handle equipment, perform maintenance tasks, and respond to situations that require physical interaction, such as assisting injured patrons.
ENVIRONMENTAL HAZARDS
• Weather Conditions: Exposure to various outdoor elements, including heat, cold, rain, and sun
• Slippery or Uneven Surfaces: Potential for slips, trips, and falls on wet or uneven ground, especially during outdoor activities or field maintenance.
• Insect Bites/Stings: Risk of exposure to insects such as mosquitoes, bees, and other pests, especially during outdoor activities.
• Chemical Exposure: Occasional exposure to cleaning chemicals, sanitizers, or maintenance products used in restrooms, equipment, and field maintenance.
• Loud Noises: Exposure to loud noises from equipment, scoreboards, PA systems, or crowds during events.
• Physical Injury: Potential for injury from handling equipment, lifting, or during interactions with participants (e.g., sports-related injuries or accidents).
