GENERAL DESCRIPTION

As a member of the Golf & Grounds team, the Grounds Operator (Level 1) performs daily routine maintenance tasks to meet the standards set out by the Regional Recreation Corporation of Wood Buffalo (RRC) for the maintenance of parking lots, trails, sports fields, golf course and all outdoor areas. In addition to daily maintenance, the Grounds Operator will assist with event setup and takedown for concerts, festivals, golf tournaments, and sporting events. Under the direction of the Supervisor of Golf Maintenance or the Supervisor of Grounds Maintenance, this position carries out maintenance-related tasks such as mowing, watering, fertilizing, garbage pickup, small hand tool use, field cover application, snow removal and sports surface preparation.  The Grounds Operator (Level 1) will also be responsible for the safe operation of specialized maintenance equipment.

RESPONSIBILITIES

Responsible for their safety as well as the safety of those around them.

Required to follow all health and safety policies as well as job procedures set out by the Regional Recreation Corporation of Wood Buffalo.

Operates electric and gas-powered tools such as line trimmers, backpack blowers and power tools

Utilizes landscape, shop, and general maintenance hand tools.

Maintains golf course, sport fields, walking trails and grass areas around the facility.

Prepares sports surfaces for daily play, including ball diamonds, artificial turf and golf course.

Assists Horticulturists in planting and maintaining flower beds and annual planters.

Assists in applications of product and cultural practices.

Assists with project-related tasks associated with artificial turf fields, golf course and ball diamond turf, bunkers, cart paths, tree removal, natural areas and irrigation repairs.

Ensures all outdoor waste receptacles are emptied, golf course bathroom facilities are cleaned and all outdoor areas kept clean and free of debris.

Assists in winter snow-clearing operations.

Plays a vital role in the setup for the events hosted on the island, including:

     Field cover installation & removal

     Fencing

     Event cleanup

     Field painting

     Golf tournament setup

Reports any mechanical, electrical and hydraulic problems to Mechanics and Supervisor or Team Lead.

Operates and helps maintain mowers, utility vehicles and all other specialty equipment by doing daily washing and equipment checks and by practicing care and attention when using equipment. 

Responsible for cleaning and maintaining storage buildings, wash bays, equipment storage, fuel storage, fertilizer shed, maintenance yard and staff locker and lunchroom.

Transporting waste materials and recyclables to the regional land fill or recycling depot.

Collecting and sorting recyclables for all RRC departments.

Other duties as assigned

QUALIFICATIONS: Education & Experience

Minimum completion of Grade 10.

A combination of education and directly related work experience in Golf Maintenance or Landscaping may be considered.

Prior Golf, Landscaping, or equivalent work experience is an asset.

Current Intermediate First Aid/CPR/AED Certification or equivalent (including CPR C) is an asset.

QUALIFICATIONS:  Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

Should possess a high level of enthusiasm, be self-motivated, and be able to work independently or in a group.

Must be capable of performing demanding physical work.

Must be able to follow verbal and written directions.

Ability to safely operate motorized equipment.

General familiarity with the sports played on the surfaces maintained by the Golf & Grounds team is an asset.

 OTHER REQUIREMENTS

Valid Class 5 Driver’s License Required (If traveling, select yes)

WORKING CONDITIONS

This position includes heavy lifting of supplies and equipment up to 50 lbs.

This position performs activities such as bending, stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting and grasping throughout shift.

Must have the manual dexterity to grab, grip, hold, pour, tear, cut, sort and reach.

This position involves working under variable temperature conditions and noise levels, in an outdoor setting.

This position requires a flexible schedule including statutory holidays, early morning, and weekend work.

Access to reliable transportation is necessary.
