Grounds Attendant Job Description
Position Summary
Performs daily maintenance, landscaping, and general upkeep of municipal facilities, grounds, and associated areas and equipment. This position specializes in groundskeeping and landscaping tasks to ensure the safety, cleanliness, and aesthetics of public spaces.
Responsibilities and Reporting During an Emergency Situation: If assigned, employees in this classification will be required to report and carry out duties as directed for the duration of an emergency. Depending on the nature of the emergency, this may require working around the clock for several days on short notice.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
Grounds and Landscaping Specialization:
• Performs routine maintenance tasks such as mowing, edging, pruning, planting, and watering lawns, trees, and landscaped areas in parks, public spaces, and dock access points.
• Trims and removes vegetation, including palm trees and shrubs, ensuring proper disposal.
• Rakes, mulches, and maintains flower beds and other landscaped features.
• Maintains irrigation systems, including minor repairs and ensuring proper operation.
• Applies fertilizers, pesticides, and herbicides in compliance with safety regulations.
• Monitors and addresses drainage issues by removing debris and controlling vegetation in canals, ditches, and waterways.
• Performs daily trash collection and ensures waste is disposed of properly in public areas, parking lot, and docks.
General Maintenance:
• Performs custodial and facility maintenance duties, including cleaning restrooms and maintaining buildings and facilities.
• Identifies and addresses maintenance issues, including plumbing and structural repairs, and reports larger issues to supervisors.
• Assists with preparation and cleanup for hurricanes, storms, and other emergency situations.
• Safely operates and maintains tools, equipment, and vehicles required for groundskeeping and maintenance tasks.
• Maintains inventory of tools and supplies, and initiates requests for replacements as needed.
• Completes required documentation, including activity logs, time sheets, and vehicle reports.
• Provides comprehensive support for park-wide projects, including general labor and specialized tasks, ensuring timely and efficient completion of assignments as directed.
• Operates a motor vehicle safely and lawfully in performance of assigned tasks as necessary and assigned.
• Performs emergency response tasks and assignments as directed.
• Assists with Town-wide public events requests and provides support for meetings and events, including nights, weekends, and holidays as assigned.
• Performs other duties as assigned.
REQUIREMENTS:
Education, Certification, and Experience:
• High school diploma/GED; one (1) year of experience working in maintenance and/or related fields.
• One (1) year of experience in groundskeeping, landscaping, or maintenance-related fields.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
• Knowledge of basic groundskeeping, housekeeping and building maintenance practices.
• Knowledge of how to use and apply paints, sealers, and stains properly.
• Knowledge and application of safety standards and precautions pertaining to the use of tools and equipment.
• Knowledge of the techniques and procedures used in streets, grounds, and facility repair and maintenance.
• Knowledge of the occupational hazards, safety precautions and personal protective equipment observed in the trade(s) of assignment.
• Ability to safely operate service vehicles, including pickup trucks, utility vehicles, riding lawnmowers, etc.
• Ability to safely operate motorized tools, manual tools, and light equipment such as lawnmowers, weed eaters, saws, drills, augers, tillers, compactors, and emergency generators.
• Ability to properly wear and utilize Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) as required by OSHA standards to ensure safety and compliance while performing assigned tasks.
• Ability to read and follow written and oral instructions.
• Ability to utilize a variety of modern office equipment and operate a computer as necessary.
• Ability to work cooperatively with other employees and the general public.
• Ability to work outdoors often during extreme weather conditions (heat, cold, rain, etc.).
• Ability to work independently or with minimal supervision.
• Ability to handle a multitude of diverse tasks simultaneously while maintaining an attention to detail for the purpose of ensuring accuracy in task performance.
• Ability to draw valid conclusions in task processing and prioritization.
• Ability to add, subtract, multiply and divide, calculate decimals and percentages and compute discount, ratio and proportion and profit and loss.
• Ability to inspect items for proper length, width and shape, and visually read various types of information.
• Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with supervisors, other employees and the public.
• Ability to work a flexible schedule, including assigned shifts, nights, weekends, and holidays, as needed to ensure adequate coverage and meet operational demands.
Physical Requirements:
• The position involves heavy physical demands, such as exerting up to 100 lbs. of force occasionally, and/or up to 50 lbs. of force frequently, and/or up to 20 lbs. of force constantly to move objects.
• Tasks involve frequent walking, standing, bending, stooping, some unassisted lifting, carrying, pushing and/or pulling of moderately heavy objects up to 50 pounds and occasionally heavy objects up to 100 pounds with the assistance of other employees and/or equipment as appropriate.
• Requires excellent eye/hand/foot coordination for operating standard and specialized electrical and gas operated equipment.
Environmental Requirements:
• Performance of essential functions may require exposure to adverse environmental conditions, such as dirt, dust, pollen, odors, wetness, humidity, rain, extreme temperatures and noise extremes, fumes, hazardous materials, heights, confined spaces, machinery, vibrations, electric currents, traffic hazards, water hazards, bright/dim light, toxic agents, disease, pathogenic substances, or animal/wildlife attacks.
