Hanlan Gas Plant Operator– Overview

Reporting to the Sr. Plant Supervisor, the Gas Plant Operator will be responsible for all aspects of gas plant operations in a safe and effective manner.  You will support the Sr. Plant Supervisor and Plant Coordinator/Chief Steam Engineer and liaise with departments including health and safety, auditors, drilling, completions, lease construction, facilities construction, environmental, land and other stakeholders such as regulators, producers, processors and landowners.

An important part of Canlins’ midstream business, Hanlan Robb gas plant Located 68km outside of Edson, AB, processes a significant portion of sour foothills gas and sulphur. This role is a rotating 7-day schedule, rotating nights and days. 

Location: Robb, AB. This position requires residence in or willingness to relocate to Edson, AB with company transportation provided from Edson.

Please note:  This position is within the scope of the collective agreement between Canlin Energy and Unifor Local 508A. Compensation will be determined as per the collective agreement.

Gas Plant Operator – The Role

  • Maintain processing reliability and product quality in the plant while optimizing production volumes in a safe environment.
  • Conduct day-to-day operational duties for the plant in a safe and economical manner and support the maintenance of a sour gas plant and associated equipment, making changes to meet product control specifications.
  • Ensure equipment is prepared for maintenance in a safe and efficient manner.
  • Provide Shift Engineer coverage as required, as outlined in ABSA.
  • Optimize equipment and process.
  • Participate in projects and turnarounds.
  • Support scheduled or non-scheduled plant shutdowns and associated work and become fully engaged with the Hanlan Robb Computer Managed Maintenance System (CMMS).
  • Monitor equipment and process parameters.
  • Enter compliance reports and near misses or events as required.
  • Maintain housekeeping standards.
  • Assess, develop, and maintain operating procedures.
  • Demonstrate and uphold all Canlin’s rules, guidelines, policies and procedures applicable to the operation.


Gas Plant Operator – The Person

  • 2nd Class Power Engineering Certificate, or significant progress on 2nd Class Power Engineering Certificate.
  • 5–10 years of sour gas experience.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Excellent understanding of sour gas operations with a focus on compression and pipelines.
  • Demonstrated ability to adapt to process changes and modifications.
  • Safety-conscious and familiar with all safety processes and protocols of a sour gas plant.
  • Strong computer skills and understanding on how to utilize software to run day-to-day operations including Outlook, Excel, maintenance systems, and procurement systems.
  • Strong interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work twelve-hour rotating shifts and cover other operators during their absence.
  • Valid class 5 driver’s license.
  • Certification in H2S Alive, First Aid, and WHIMIS.
  • Resides in or willing to relocate to Edson, AB.
