Foreign Language Teacher – Chinese (part-time for 2024 - 2025 school year)

Notre Dame Preparatory School, a Catholic, independent school for girls grades 6-12, located in Towson Maryland, seeks a part-time Chinese teacher for the 2024-2025 school year. The teacher’s responsibilities will be to teach basic levels of Mandarin to middle school students or more advanced Mandarin to upper level students in addition to one Independent Study class. The ideal candidate will have a strong academic record in Mandarin language and the Chinese culture with an understanding of the communicative method of instruction. While special emphasis is placed on the ACTFL Proficiency Guidelines, there will also be a focus on the implementation of the Partnership 21st Century Skills Map. An understanding of the developmental needs of the learners is also needed.

The Foreign Language Department’s philosophy emphasizes multi-sensory, cooperative learning, with the teacher acting as facilitator for student discovery of concepts. An understanding of a variety of learning styles is essential. Notre Dame Prep is a one-to-one laptop school and has a language lab with audio, video, and internet capability; the skills and knowledge to utilize available technology is a strong consideration in the ideal candidate. 

Responsibilities: 

  • Teach two (2) class periods each day. 
  • Work collaboratively with members of the Foreign Languages department on developing/improving curriculum
  • Participate in ongoing professional development.
  • Participate in the school community with other duties as assigned, such as advisory.

The ideal candidate will have: 

  • Bachelor’s degree required. Master’s degree preferred. 
  • Native Mandarin speaker preferred.
  • Maryland State Teacher Certification preferred but not required.  
  • Prior high school or secondary school teaching experience preferred but not required.  
  • A passion for teaching high school and middle school students.
  • Ability to integrate technology effectively into instruction.? 
  • Ability to collaborate effectively as a member of the Social Studies department and the NDP community.
