Lube Mechanic
St. James Parish Government is hiring for - Lube Mechanic - under the Operations Department.
JOB FUNCTION: To maintain and repair light to medium duty mobile equipment. This position concerns the independent performance of maintenance and small repair duties tires, brakes, and oil changes. Individuals in this position must be able to complete most of their duties and responsibilities with a minimum amount of supervision. This job requires that the employee supply all hand tools. This position is classified as non-exempt, Safety Sensitive and Essential during declared emergencies or natural disasters. This position is subject to random drug testing.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Includes any combination of the following illustrative examples of duties and responsibilities including but not limited to:
- Conducts regular maintenance inspections and performs regular preventive maintenance such as oil changes, lubrication, filter and radiator hose changes, and proper fluid level maintenance, tires, and brakes.
- Locates worn, dirty, or poorly adjusted parts through visual and listening inspection or use of test equipment.
- Makes repairs by cleaning, reinstalling, or replacing defective parts of components and systems.
- Makes repairs and maintenance of equipment powered by small internal combustion engines such as: lawnmowers, string trimmers, and outboard motors, etc.
- Assists higher-level mechanics in removing and repairing transmissions and performing major overhauls or engine replacement.
- Maintains equipment by washing and cleaning.
- Maintains vehicle and equipment records electronically or hard copy.
- Orders parts as required.
- Accounts for all time and for all material used in performing assigned duties.
- Completes purchase requisitions and submits for approval.
- Completes all reports and forms required in conjunction with work assignments.
- Follows all safety rules and regulations in performing work assignments.
- Participates in training programs required for the development of skills and knowledge.
- Other duties as assigned.

OTHER SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
· Knowledge of the operating procedures and maintenance of equipment.
· General knowledge of the hazards and applicable safety rules and regulations in equipment operation.
· Working knowledge of the hazards and applicable Louisiana traffic safety rules and regulations for transporting heavy equipment by truck and trailer.
· Ability to clean and perform minor maintenance and repair of equipment operated.
· Ability to perform physical labor as required of the position.
· Ability to identify operating problems of equipment assigned.
· Ability to effectively work on a computer including but not limited to Parish work order, purchase order, payroll systems, MS Word, and email.
EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE: High School diploma or general education diploma (GED) and/or 5 years related mechanic experience and/or training.
MATHEMATICAL SKILLS: Ability to add, subtract, and divide in all units of measurement using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.
REASONING ABILITY: Ability to define common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form. Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.
CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, AND REGISTRATIONS: Must possess a valid Louisiana License and have an acceptable driving record.

WORK ENVIRONMENT: The work environment characteristics described here are representatives of those that an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job. While performing the duties of this job, the employee regularly works in outside weather conditions, extreme heat/cold, near moving mechanical parts, and is regularly exposed to vibration. The employee is frequently exposed to fumes or airborne particles. The employee occasionally works in high, precarious places.
The noise level in the work environment is usually very loud.
