Equipment Operator I & II
St. James Parish Government is hiring for Equipment Operator I and II in the Operations Department.
JOB FUNCTION: Drives or operates gasoline or diesel-powered equipment characterized as moderately complex; trucks, tractors, backhoes, dozer, road graders, or other equipment in order to maintain parish property, servitude, rights-of-way; and to repair roads and other facilities. The distinction between an Equipment Operator I and this position concerns the use of more complicated equipment and skill required. This position is classified as essential during declared emergencies or natural disasters. This is a nonexempt position, forty hours per week. This position is “Safety Sensitive” and subject to random drug testing as per the St. James Parish Government Employee Handbook. Individuals in this class can complete the majority of their projects/assignments with a minimum amount of supervision.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Includes any combination of the following illustrative examples of duties and responsibilities including but not limited to:
· Performs maintenance to equipment such as checking fuel, oil and, other lubricant levels; performs necessary emergency repairs; observes indicators to check for proper function of machinery and stops operation when indicated; reports major mechanical problem for repair
· Maintains logs for mileage, fuel consumption, materials transported in accordance with local, state, and federal regulations
· Drives or operates small and large dump trucks, tandem trucks, side-arm/boom mower tractors, bush-hogs or related grass cutting equipment, to maintain parish property, servitude, and rights-of-way
· Operates grader or dozer to spread and level dirt, gravel, and stone to grade specifications in construction and maintenance of earthwork structures, such as highways, streets, and temporary roads
· Operates power-driven machines, equipped with movable shovel, to excavate or move dirt, rock, sand, and other material
· Maintains equipment by washing and cleaning
· Other duties as assigned

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE: High School diploma or general education diploma (GED) and 3 years experience and/or training.
CERTIFICATES,
LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS: Must
possess a valid Louisiana Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) with a class “B”
designation and have an acceptable driving record.
OTHER SKILLS AND
ABILITIES:
· Knowledge of the operating procedures and maintenance of equipment operated
· General knowledge of the hazards and applicable safety rules and regulations in equipment operation
· Working knowledge of traffic laws and regulations related to equipment operated
· Ability to clean and assist in minor maintenance and repair of equipment operated
· Ability to perform physical labor required of the position
· Ability to identify operating problems of equipment assigned

100 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close
vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and
the ability to adjust focus.
WORK ENVIRONMENT: The work
environment characteristics described here are representatives of those that an
employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job. While
performing the duties of this job, the employee regularly works in outside
weather conditions, extreme heat/cold, near moving mechanical parts, and is
regularly exposed to vibration. The employee is frequently exposed to fumes or airborne
particles. The employee occasionally works in high, precarious places.
The noise level in the work environment is usually very loud.
