 Job Description

 

Title: Teacher

Reports To: Principal

Primary purpose:

·       The teacher maintains a structured but caring and warm classroom allowing the students to thrive and develop with confidence and trust.  The teacher is accessible, approachable, and welcoming, managing student situations with discretion, respect, and sensitivity. 

 

Day to day responsibilities:

·       Teach phonics and reading to elementary school aged dyslexic children utilizing dePaul School’s Orton-Gillingham based curriculum (training provided).

·       Potentially teach math, science or social studies to elementary school aged dyslexic children utilizing a variety of multi-sensory, research-based teaching methods proven to help students with learning differences.

·       Establish and maintain standards of student behavior needed to achieve a functional learning atmosphere in the classroom.

·       Evaluate students’ academic and social growth, keep appropriate records, and prepare progress reports.

·       Communicate with parents through digital means and conferences to inform, update and discuss students’ progress.

·       Maintain professional competence through in-service education activities provided by the school.

·       Supervise students in out-of-classroom activities as necessary.

Qualifications:

·       Bachelor’s degree from an accredited university required.

·       Classroom management experience required.  Class size is typically under 10 students.

·       Training in an Orton-Gillingham based curriculum preferred.

·       Experience working with children with learning disabilities preferred.

       Certification or experience utilizing a multi-sensory phonics/linguistic program preferred.
