About the Position

Akiba Yavneh Academy (AYA), a coeducational, early childhood through 12th-grade school located in Dallas, Texas, seeks an experienced Early Childhood Assistant Teacher who is passionate about early childhood education. AYA believes that early childhood education is a fundamental building block in creating successful lifelong learners. The classroom teacher is one of the most critical drivers of student success and AYA is committed to compensating, developing, and supporting its teaching staff. This is a 10-month contract position beginning in August 2024 and ending in June 2025 with the possibility to renew. 


The Assistant Teacher is responsible for assisting the classroom teacher with the general management and facilitation of classroom instruction. They follow the lead of the classroom teacher and provide support to students through repetition and reinforcement of educational material, assistance with fine and gross motor skills development, and the provision of additional and specialized support as identified and determined appropriate by the classroom teacher. The Instructional Assistant is the eyes and ears of the classroom teacher and is always looking for ways to support classroom activities and instruction. 


Responsibilities


  • Engage with and monitor students on the playground during playtime to ensure students have a safe environment, both physically and socially, for self-directed play
  • Assist in providing individual and small-group instruction to support the differentiation of curriculum to the needs of the students' intellectual or other abilities as requested by the classroom teacher.
  • Assist in establishing and maintaining standards of student behavior as established by the classroom teacher.
  • Prepare instructional materials as requested by the classroom teacher.
  • Assist the classroom teacher in creating an environment that is conducive to learning and appropriate to the maturity and interests of the students.
  • Support the classroom teacher with daily and long-range lessons and classroom activities.
  • Conduct learning exercises with small groups of students as requested by the classroom teacher.
  • Alert the teacher to the unique and special needs of individual students.
  • Check students' work for compliance with the teacher's instruction.
  • Prepare instructional materials as requested by the classroom teacher.
  • Assist the classroom teacher in creating an environment that is conducive to learning and appropriate to the maturity and interests of the students.
  • Support the classroom teacher with daily and long-range lessons and classroom activities.
  • Conduct learning exercises with small groups of students as requested by the classroom teacher.
  • Alert the teacher to the unique and special needs of individual students.
  • Check students' work for compliance with the teacher's instructions.
  • Collect suitable materials for educational displays, decorate, and prepare the classroom as instructed by the classroom teacher.
  • Participate in all classroom celebrations and ceremonies including singing, dancing, prayers, etc
  • Assist students during meal and snack times
  • Assist students with personal hygiene, cleanliness, toileting, or diapering when appropriate
  • Support students who are struggling so that they may remain on task and/or be removed from the room for a brain break without distracting the rest of the class or upsetting the pace of instruction
  • Take all necessary and reasonable precautions to protect students, equipment, materials, and facilities as instructed by the classroom teacher. Report if there is an issue that has not been addressed or assigned by the classroom teacher to the administration.
  • Assist in implementing all policies and rules governing student life and conduct.
  • Under the direction of the classroom teacher helps maintain order in the classroom; and monitors students to keep them on task.
  • Perform a variety of additional tasks such as photocopying, filing, answering the classroom telephone, etc. as requested.
  • Assist classroom teacher(s) in performing specific duties as assigned or by undertaking specialized tasks as assigned to help maintain individual records for each student.
  • Attend staff meetings when required
  • Other essential classroom support tasks as assigned by the classroom teacher or division head

Traits & Qualifications of an AYA Early Childhood Assistant Teacher

  • Minimum Education – High School Diploma. Candidates in the process of getting a degree in early childhood education or pursuing a CDA preferred.
  • 1 – 3 years of experience teaching and/or caring for early childhood-aged children.
  • Proficiency in English language required.
  • A positive, energetic approach to teaching and working with young people.
  • Effective and personable communication style conducive to interacting with students, parents, colleagues, and other members of the Akiba Yavneh community.
  • A growth mindset and commitment to continuous learning.
  • Proven track record of punctual attendance, meeting performance goals and expectations, and the ability to work together with colleagues and team members positively and collaboratively. 
  • CPR/Infant CPR, and First Aid Certification.
  • Must be able to lift 50lbs.

School Year Contract: 180 days

Start Date: August 14, 2024

End Date: June 6, 2025
