Teaching Philosophy of ABC

The teaching philosophy at American Baptist College aims to help students develop a rigorous spirit of curiosity that connects theory to praxis, promotes community and inclusion, and cultivates habits of life- long learning through continuous self-reflection and self-evaluation. To accomplish these aims we will teach our students to grow ethically and spiritually by expanding their vision to include the principles of social justice, equity, advocacy, and leadership (SEAL) to build their analytical and interpretative skills in both faith communities and the broader society.

 

Job Description

 

The Director of Academic Achievement is responsible for providing leadership and strategic direction for the academic success of ABC students. This role includes overseeing the writing studio as well as programs and services that support student academic success, particularly in writing and composition, as well as teaching English composition courses, if needed. The Director, reporting to the Academic Dean, will work to promote a culture of academic excellence and support. Responsibilities include but are not limited to the following

 

1.        Leadership and Administration:

·       Develop and implement strategic plans and policies for the Academic Achievement Center.

·       Manage budgets and allocate resources effectively to support student success initiatives.

                         ·       Conduct regular assessments and evaluations of programs and services to ensure their effectiveness and continuous improvement.

2.        Academic Achievement Initiatives:


·       Design and implement programs to enhance student retention, persistence, and graduation rates.

                          ·       Oversee academic advising, tutoring, and other support services aimed at promoting student success.

                          ·       Develop and deliver workshops and seminars on academic skills, including writing, study strategies, and time management.

                          ·       Collaborate with the Academic Dean and the Director of Academic and Career Coaching to identify and address barriers to

                             student success,

 

3.        Writing Studio Oversight:

 

                    ·       Lead the Writing Studio in providing writing support and resources to students across all disciplines.

                    ·       Develop and implement writing workshops, tutoring sessions, and other writing support services.

·       Collaborate with faculty to integrate writing support into the curriculum.

                    ·       Ensure the Writing Studio is equipped with the necessary resources and technologies to support student writing needs.

 

4.        Teaching (If needed):

 

                   ·       Teach undergraduate courses in English composition, literature, rhetoric, or creative writing.

                   ·       Develop and deliver course content that fosters critical thinking, writing proficiency, and academic success.

                   ·       Provide individualized support and feedback to students to enhance their writing and composition skills.

 

 

Qualifications:

 

                          ·       Ph.D. in Literature, English Composition, Rhetoric, Creative Writing, or a related field.

·       A minimum of 3-5 years of experience in teaching English composition or a related field in a higher education setting.

                          ·       Experience in academic support services, academic achievement initiatives, and leading writing centers.

 

Skills

                       ·       Experience in program development and administration.

                       ·       Excellent organizational and administrative skills

                       ·       Ability to manage multiple projects and initiatives simultaneously.

                       ·       Demonstrated excellence in teaching English composition, literature, rhetoric, or creative writing.

     ·       Strong written and verbal communication skills.

     ·       Ability to provide constructive feedback and support to students.

     ·       Strong analytical skills with the ability to assess programs and services.

     ·       Attention to detail and accuracy in reporting and documentation.
