A Dietitian is responsible for assessing the nutritional needs of residents, developing personalized meal plans based on their dietary restrictions and preferences, providing nutrition counseling, monitoring food intake, and collaborating with other healthcare staff to ensure residents receive optimal nutritional care within the facility; their duties may also include menu planning, kitchen sanitation oversight, and staff education on dietary guidelines.
Key responsibilities:
Nutritional assessments:
Conduct comprehensive nutritional assessments of residents to identify dietary needs, including medical history, current diet, weight, and lab values.
Individualized meal plans:
Create detailed, customized meal plans for each resident considering their dietary restrictions (allergies, diabetes, dysphagia), preferences, and nutritional goals.
Menu planning:
Develop and monitor the facility's menus to ensure variety, nutritional balance, and adherence to dietary guidelines.
Nutrition counseling:
Provide individual and group nutrition counseling to residents and their families to educate them about healthy eating habits and dietary modifications.
Food intake monitoring:
Regularly monitor residents' food intake to identify potential issues and make necessary adjustments to meal plans.
Collaboration with healthcare team:
Work closely with nurses, doctors, and other healthcare professionals to coordinate resident care and ensure nutritional needs are met.
Kitchen oversight:
Conduct periodic inspections of the kitchen to ensure proper food handling, sanitation, and compliance with food safety regulations.
Staff education:
Provide training and education to dietary staff on proper food preparation, portion control, and dietary restrictions.
Documentation:
Maintain accurate records of nutritional assessments, meal plans, interventions, and progress notes.
Required qualifications:
Registered Dietitian (RD) credential from the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics
Bachelor's degree in dietetics or nutrition
Experience in healthcare settings, preferably with geriatric populations
Excellent communication and interpersonal skills to work effectively with residents, families, and healthcare team
