Summary of Duties:


Under the direction of the Maternal and Child Health (MCH) Manager, the Cook is responsible for planning, shopping for, preparing, and serving nutritious meals and snacks for families participating in MCH programs. These include Baby Clinic, Walk and Talk, Prenatal Classes, and Play Groups focused on children aged 0–6 years and their caregivers. The Cook plays a key role in supporting family wellness by providing culturally respectful, child-friendly, and health-conscious meals that reflect the needs and traditions of the Lil’wat community.


Key Deliverables and Expectations:


  • Collaborate with the MCH team to plan meal and snack menus.
  • Prepare healthy, age-appropriate, and culturally sensitive meals for program participants, with a focus on early childhood and prenatal nutrition.
  • Use the Canada Food Guide and traditional Lil’wat food knowledge to guide menu planning.
  • Shop for food and kitchen supplies using Lil’wat Nation purchase orders while staying within budget.
  • Ensure proper storage, handling, and preparation of food according to Food Safe standards.
  • Set up and clean up food preparation areas before each session.
  • Maintain cleanliness and organization of kitchen space and equipment.
  • Monitor and manage food inventory to avoid waste and ensure freshness.
  • Prepare meals for special events or community gatherings as needed within the MCH scope.
  • Accommodate food allergies, sensitivities, and dietary restrictions (e.g., vegetarian, gluten-free).
  • Participate in planning meetings and program evaluations with the MCH team.
  • Support health and wellness education by occasionally sharing simple, healthy recipes or food prep tips with families, when requested.
  • Other related duties as assigned by the MCH Manager.

Experience and Attributes: 


  • Minimum Grade 10 education; completion of a culinary or nutrition program is an asset.
  • Valid Food Safe certification (required).
  • Experience preparing meals for families and young children; experience in a community or program setting preferred.
  • Knowledge of traditional Lil’wat foods and a willingness to integrate cultural practices into meal planning.
  • Baby Safe/CPR/AED First Aid certification is an asset.
  • Strong organizational skills and ability to manage time effectively.
  • Ability to work both independently and collaboratively within a multidisciplinary team.
  • Respectful, compassionate, and culturally aware approach to serving families.
  • Must have a valid BC Class 5 Driver’s License, clean Driver’s Abstract, and a reliable vehicle.
  • Must be able to provide a clear Criminal Record Check including the vulnerable sector.
