Job Title:              Controls Technologist   

Reports to:         Senior Electrical/Controls Engineer – Volm Canada           

 

Job Summary

The controls technologist will design controls software for electrical control systems, equipment, and machinery (Robot/PLC/HMI), install electrical components and lead in the wiring and support of automated equipment installations and provide technical support during startup and system testing. Technologists in this position will be responsible for the design and development of control software for PLCs, Safety Controllers, Industrial HMI’s, Robots, VFD’s, Servo Motors etc. based on project requirements and specifications, installation and startup of automated systems and I/O field devices, analyzing project requirements and sourcing the required cables and components for project completion. Work with the engineering team as well as project managers, customers, and machine builders to solve problems to provide the customer with a complete and functional system.

Essential Duties

Electrical

·         All aspects of wiring and installation of automated machinery

·         Interpret electrical design drawings for electrical requirements (AutoCAD)

·         Document changes on the floor and ensure all electrical drawings are updated.

·         Document methods and best practices for electrical installations and I/O verification

·         Provide input on equipment installations and troubleshooting.

  • Supervise recommissioning at the customers facility.

·         Build and assist in the design of standard control panels.

·         Assist in continuous improvement of electrical hardware for improved efficiencies.

·         Oversee contractors for various portions of projects.

 

Software

·         Design controls software for PLCs, Safety Controllers, Industrial HMI’s, Robots, VFD’s, Servo Motors etc.

·         Startup and commission automated systems on shop floor and customers facility.

·         Assist in the development of PLC programming standards, methods, and practices.

·         Develop SCADA/Data collection systems for production reporting.

·         Participate in R&D initiatives, test and troubleshoot new concepts, maintain, modify/ improve existing electrical control systems.

·         Provide technical support for software and hardware post equipment installation.

·         Write user manuals/training programs to communicate functionality of equipment.

·         Setup and configure VFD’s, Servo Drives and wire motors to specified voltage (SEW, Schnieder)

·         Assign IP addresses and communication parameters to out-of-box I/O modules and control devices.

·         Follow startup guides for industrial robots (Kuka)

·         Calibrate scale indicators on automated weighing applications.

·         Test, troubleshoot issues, maintain, and modify electrical control systems.

·         Assist in gathering and creation of videos and pictures.

 

Required Skills and Abilities

·         Familiar with Industry Standards CSA/ESA, UL

·         MS Office skills, Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Outlook, and Project

·         Understanding of Gantt Charts and commitment to meeting timelines.

·         Meticulous attention to detail in completing tasks and maintaining high-quality standards.

·         Ability to work on multiple projects at one time and adaptable to change.

·         Communicate with contractors and other relevant authorities (e.g., ESA) to gain necessary information required to successfully complete electrical wiring designs.

·         Customer service orientation with a focus on understanding and addressing customer needs.

Education and Experience

·         A post-secondary engineering diploma or equivalent, specializing in electrical, mechanical, or mechatronics.

·         Certificate of qualification as an industrial electrician or maintenance electrician preferred.

·         5+ years of hands-on electrical wiring, troubleshooting, integration, machine building, packaging equipment/automation industry or robotics expertise.

·         Experience creating software for PLC’s, HMI’s and Robotics.

 

Physical Requirements

·         Ability to stand, walk, and move around for extended periods of time.

·         Capability to lift 50 lbs. and carry objects of various weights.

·         Proficiency in using hands, fingers, and arms for tasks such as typing or writing.

·         Sufficient visual acuity to read documents, recognize details at close and distant ranges.

·         Ability to hear and understand verbal communication.

·         Flexibility to bend, stoop, and reach low or high objects.

·         Ability to perform physical tasks, such as walking, lifting, pushing, pulling, stooping, reaching repetitive motions.

·         Adaptability to work in varying environmental conditions, such as temperature extremes, noise, dust, or fumes, depending on the nature of the job.

·         Willingness to adhere to safety protocols and wear protective gear, including helmets, goggles, gloves, and safety shoes, as required by the job.

Travel Requirements

This position requires occasional overnight travel and occasional travel within the workday.   

 

Driver Qualification

The ability to drive a company owned/leased vehicle or personal vehicle on behalf of the company is required. Inclusion in the company’s driver qualification program is required to drive a company owned/leased vehicle or personal vehicle.

 

Becoming a qualified driver includes:

·         Agree to the company driving policies that apply to company owned/leased vehicle or personal vehicle as applicable.

·         Possess and maintain a valid driver license and be a minimum of 21 years of age.

·         Maintain an acceptable driving record, as evidenced by completion of a baseline motor vehicle record check and ongoing monitoring.

·         When driving a personal vehicle on behalf of the company, must provide a copy of the declaration page from personal auto insurance that shows the policy dates and minimum coverage amounts ($300,000 bodily injury per accident/$100,000 property damage per accident or if driving less than 5 hours/200 miles a year $50,000 bodily injury per accident/$10,000 property damage per accident or the state minimum, whichever is more). This requirement is initially and then annually thereafter.
