Summary of Duties:

 

The Community Justice Development Facilitator will lead a community-driven project to engage with the Lilwat7ul on “nxekmen” (Our Natural Laws and Customs) and “muta7 nt’akmen” (Our Way of Life). Responsibilities include organizing and facilitating community gatherings, workshops, panels, and land-based activities to deepen understanding of revitalizing traditional laws (“nxekmen”). The facilitator will conduct research, document findings, and develop educational materials to influence legal and social systems, while assessing existing community services, identifying gaps (e.g. Outreach, Victims Assistance Services, Court Advocate), and creating models to revitalize outreach and victim assistance. The facilitator will also organize, track, and report on project data, and collaborate with stakeholders to integrate Lil’wat traditions with current legal frameworks.

 

 

Key Deliverables and Expectations:


  • Organize and lead meetings, themed workshops, panels, and outdoor activities, to maintain Líl̓wat’s natural laws and customs (“nxekmen”) and ways of life (“muta7 nt’akmen”). Plan, advertise, and encourage participation to bring people together, including stakeholders. 
  • Research, document, and incorporate Líl̓wat’s natural laws and customs (“nxekmen”) and ways of life (“muta7 nt’akmen”) into educational materials, reports, and presentations to share teachings and influence change within current Canadian legal system. Work with stakeholders, legal groups and Líl̓wat to manage/navigate the intersection of these traditional laws into current systems.
  • Find proactive ways to bring forward Líl̓wat’s natural laws and customs (“nxekmen”) and ways of life (“muta7 nt’akmen”) to ensure progress toward self-determination.
  • Identify, coordinate and vie for systemic change with stakeholders by mapping areas of legal overlap and gaps, promoting understanding and cooperation between legal and cultural systems. Work with stakeholders to identify ways to navigate overlaps and gaps between legal systems, ensuring alignment with Lil’wat’s laws while pushing for systemic change.
  • Evaluate and improve community services like outreach and victim support through ‘ats’xentsut’ models (taking care of ourselves) to strengthen these services. Address gaps in service delivery and identify roles to revitalize in the community.
  • Utilizing resources such as demographics, court records, and police reports to compare Líl̓wat’s natural laws and customs (“nxekmen”) with provincial and federal laws. Verify equivalents in the context of these legal systems.
  • Adhere to the Lil’wat Language and Culture Heritage Authority policy and ethics.
  • Organize, track, and report on project data, ensuring all information is recorded and shared according to project guidelines for future use.
  • Perform other related duties as requested.

Experience and Attributes:

  • Must have a degree or diploma in legal studies or a related field, or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
  • Must have a Lil’wat Language and Culture Certificate or be enrolled in a St’at’imcets Language Program.
  • Experience in research, policy development, and social services delivery, with an understanding of the intersection between traditional laws and colonial legal systems is an asset.
  • Proficient written and verbal communication skills in the English, and St’at’imcets languages.
  • Ability to work independently and as an integral member of various teams.
  • Strong organizational skills to track, monitor, and report on data, with meticulous attention to detail and effective time management.
  • Demonstrated ability to meet deadlines, prioritize tasks, manage multiple assignments simultaneously, and maintain confidentiality.
  • Strong proficiency in Microsoft Word, Outlook, Excel, and PowerPoint.
  • Motivated self-starter and with strong interpersonal skills.
  • Highly professional in all aspects of business, presentation and interaction with all stakeholders, clients, and Members.
  • Valid BC Class 5 Driver’s License, a clean Driver’s Abstract, and a reliable vehicle.
  • Must be able to provide a clear Criminal Record Check, including vulnerable sector.
