Summary of Position

The CNC Machinist is responsible for reading and interpreting sketches, prints, and other related technical data to produce quality parts using conventional Computer Numerical Controlled (CNC) machine equipment.


The CNC Machinist’s main objective is to read and interpret sketches, prints, and other related technical data to produce quality parts. The CNC Machinist is responsible for producing machined parts via the use of conventional Computer Numerical Controlled (CNC) machine equipment.

Responsibilities and Duties

As a minimum, the following is a basic description of typical duties and responsibilities expected of the CNC Machinist. These duties are not exhaustive and are subject to change as the needs of the organization require.

  • Set up and operate numerical control lathe to perform various machine functions, such as turning, facing, drilling, boring, threading, grooving, and milling of metallic and non-metallic workpieces.
  • Read sketches or drawings to determine the tooling requirements, setup procedures, control settings, and machining methods and sequences while utilizing knowledge of machine tool capabilities, machinability of materials, and shop math.
  • Enter commands or manually adjust machine controls to correct malfunctions or out-of-tolerance machining. Operate machine manually to perform non-automated functions or when machine malfunctions.
  • Maintain a neat, clean, and organized work area and machine to aid in the efficient operation of the CNC machine.
  • Perform dimensional inspection of machined parts using basic measuring instruments commonly required during parts inspection (calipers, micrometers, gauges, etc.).
  • Maintain a professional and cooperative relationship with all supervisors and co-workers.
  • Inform supervisory personnel when raw product, events, or finished products are not conforming to required standards.
  • Maintain and perform preventative maintenance on machine and related systems.
  • Estimate scheduled workload capacity and running time to assist the supervisor with machine shop logistics.
  • Perform all job tasks in a safe manner as per company safety policies and procedures.
  • Adhere to Company safety rules, regulations, and quality standards.

Required Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Two or more years of experience operating CNC machines.
  • Basic knowledge and understanding of Computer Numerical Controlled (CNC) machine equipment, including but not limited to:
    • Determine and adjust Cutting Conditions including DOC, speeds, and feeds.
  • Safe operation of equipment
  • Basic math skills
  • Ability to calculate and input tool and work offset entries and monitor machine settings and performance for tool wear and possible imminent failure

·         Knowledge and use of basic hand tools during the machining process, such as files, wrenches, and de-burring tools

·         Ability to interpret basic 2D blueprints to determine part dimensions for inspection purposes.

·         Basic understanding of cutting tools used for machining and their proper applications

·         Basic understanding of measuring tools, such as calipers, micrometers, gauges, and how they function

·         Basic understanding of G-code and/or Mazatrol programming language

·         Ability to maintain a regular work schedule sufficient to meet the needs of the CNC Department

·         Excellent organizational, problem solving skills, and time management skills

·         Ability to effectively multi-task and work independently on assigned tasks

·         Operate with high integrity, maintaining positive relations with co-workers and supervisors

·         Strong work ethic; self-motivated
