About the Role

The Children’s Counsellor for the Sexual Abuse Intervention Program and the Community Mental Health Program provides individual, family and /or group counseling services to children between ages of 3 and 18 who have experienced violence. The Counsellor reports to the Lead, Child and Family Counselling.

What You’ll Do

  • Delivers services per the SAIP and CMHP Schedule of Service. 
  • Ensures personal, program, and client safety, adhering to work safe standards.
  • Provides a safe space for individual, family, and group counseling for children.
  • Conducts client assessments and develops SMART goal-based treatment plans.
  • Considers risk factors and safety in all interactions with children, youth, and families.
  • Collaborates with parents, families, and care providers to support children.
  • Builds rapport, fosters trust, and makes referrals to community resources.
  • Participates in team meetings, case discussions, and clinical supervision.
  • Engages in constructive feedback with clients, colleagues, and community partners.
  • Maintains communication with schools and other agencies as needed.
  • Demonstrates cultural competency with Indigenous families and communities.
  • Keeps accurate client records per program and SCCSS policies.
  • Works with the Program Lead to develop standards, accountability measures, and reports.
  • Stays informed on community demographics to reduce service barriers.
  • Ensures effective service delivery consistent with agency mandates, policies, and compliance requirements.
  • Supports ongoing compliance with accreditation standards, new standards, and CARF requirements.

What You Bring

  • Master’s degree in clinical counseling, social work, psychology, or related field (or relevant undergrad with relevant experience). 
  • Minimum three years’ experience in a related field preferred.
  • Experience with children/youth affected by sexual abuse and those under 12 with sexual behavior issues.
  • Strong understanding of trauma-informed, anti-oppressive family systems work.
  • Knowledge of colonial impacts, including residential schools, on Indigenous peoples.
  • Understanding of violence dynamics against marginalized individuals.
  • Ability to apply an anti-oppressive, feminist analysis of gender violence.
  • Expertise in abuse dynamics, parenting, mental health, and addictions.
  • Knowledge of child development and experience with expressive and evidence-based therapies.
  • Skilled in working respectfully with diverse cultures and socio-economic backgrounds.
  • Experience with non-violent crisis intervention, particularly in mental health contexts.
  • Flexible work style with ability to collaborate, case manage, and advocate independently.
  • Strong teamwork and partnership skills across programs and community organizations.
  • Excellent communication, organization, and interpersonal skills.
  • Advanced interviewing, assessment, and conflict resolution skills.
  • Knowledge of relevant local, provincial, and federal regulations.
  • Proficiency in ECR electronic client records systems.
  • Experience in the non-profit sector is an asset.

Additional information

  • A Class 5 driver’s license is required to travel to different sites or meetings.
  • Criminal Record Check (CRC) clearance is required for working with vulnerable populations.
  • This is an in-office position
