  • Hours of Work: 10am-6pm with some flexibility to meet operational needs.
  • Salary Range: $24.97- $28.62 per hour + comprehensive benefits package and pension plan.

The Central Okanagan Emergency Shelter Society (COESS), operating as Kelowna Women's Shelter (KWS), provides a range of services, with a focus on the prevention of domestic abuse and providing support services for women and children, during and following an abuse crisis.

Job Summary

  • Reporting to the Domestic Abuse Housing & Programs & Services Supervisor – West Kelowna, the Child and Youth Worker (WK) monitors and conducts recreational activities with children or youth ages 0 to 12 and is responsible for the following:
  • Monitors and ensures the safety and comfort of children or youths. 
  • Promptly reporting any issues to the Domestic Abuse Housing & Programs & Services Supervisor and effectively responding to emergencies as per established guidelines.
  • Support case managers in carrying out programs that promote the physical, cognitive, emotional, and social development of children.
  • Plans, conducts, and engages children in activities by telling stories, teaching songs, playing games, and preparing crafts.
  • Prepare snacks and arrange rooms or furniture for lunch and rest periods.
  • Assist with proper eating, dressing and toilet habits.
  • Submit written observations on children to early case managers or supervisor.
  • Attends, and participates in, training/certification programs.
  • Attends, and participates in, community, staff and other meetings as required.
  • Performs other related duties as required.

Skills and Qualifications 

  • Grade 12 with a minimum of an Early Childhood Education Certificate.
  • One year recent related experience or a combination of education, training & experience.
  • Excellent communication skills verbally and in written.
  • Proficiency with MS Office Suite 
  • Indigenous Awareness and Diversity training an asset.
  • The ability to provide service in a respectful, empathetic, and feminist centered manner while maintaining appropriate personal and professional boundaries.
  • The ability to work independently and in a self-directing manner, as well as the ability to work in a cooperative and collaborative manner with Transition and Second Stage Housing teams.

 Other Requirements

  • Criminal record check.
  • Standard First Aid CPR-C & AED.
