Position Description

Department: Youth Programs

Reports to: Program Manager

Location: Hamilton, ON

Hours of Work:  0-14 hours per week

Start Date: TBD

Posting Date: March 11th, 2024

 

Coordinates the meaningful engagement of community members and youth aged 11-15. The Check-In Staff is responsible for building and maintaining relationships with YWeLEAP and RISE Collective participants through regular check-ins and weekly programming;

  • Supports youth in Hamilton area through weekly contact using various methods of communication;
  • Ensures all modes of contact are available and used (i.e.: phone, online messaging, email, etc.) to fit the varying needs of clients;
  • Co-facilitate and support weekly activities, workshops and events for youth;
  • Attends training and ongoing learning on the needs of young people in Hamilton, and how to best support them;
  • Reports to Youth Programs Manager when needed, indicating trends and immediate needs of clients;
  • Refers youth to resources for further support and referrals;
  • Supports young people in Hamilton to form and maintain healthy relationships with their peers and community;
  • Maintains a high level of confidentiality when working with sensitive and personal client, employee and contract information;
  • Participates in mandatory organizational and departmental trainings and meetings;
  • Maintains appropriate record-keeping in accordance with YWCA Hamilton’s policies and procedures, and confidentiality/privacy policies;
  • Provides recommendations to strengthen existing policies or processes;
  • Develops and nurtures meaningful internal and external working relationships and partnerships;
  • Supports YWCA Hamilton mission, vision and values;
  • Perform other duties as required.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

  • Works up to 14 hours per week;
  • Work schedule includes days, afternoons, evenings and weekends based on program need.

Qualifications

  • Experience working with youth population is required;
  • Experience working with BIPOC communities is required, preference given to candidates with lived experience;
  • Experience working with 2SLGBTQIA+, or disability communities an asset;
  • Understanding of the barriers affecting young people is required;
  • Experience supporting peers (formal or informal) is an asset;
  • Knowledge of Hamilton’s youth service organizations and resources is an asset;
  • Ability to motivate and encourage participation from participants, while respecting limits and boundaries;
  • Must be able to work from a feminist, anti-racist/anti-oppressive perspective;
  • Committed to creating spaces for all women and gender-diverse youth, and can identify and mitigate barriers to participation, such as racism, ableism, classism, etc.;
  • Excellent interpersonal and written communication skills;
  • Must have current Standard First Aid and CPR certificate or willingness to obtain at own cost;
  • Bilingual English/French or other languages an asset;
  • Ability to work a schedule which includes days, early mornings, afternoons, evenings and weekends based on program needs;
  • Must provide a current Vulnerable Sector Police check or willingness to obtain at own cost.
