We are in search of a Boat Port Engineer for our Harahan, LA office.

JOB TITLE:                  Boat Maintenance Port Engineer

DEPARTMENT:           Boat Maintenance

SUMMARY DESCRIPTION:

Effectively implement the company’s maintenance and repair plan to ensure that boats are in excellent condition and ready for safe operation by the crew.  Duties range from performing periodic inspections to troubleshooting equipment problems to performing hands-on mechanical and electrical repairs.

Reports to:                  Director of Boat Maintenance & New Construction

Supervises:                   This position has no supervisory responsibilities

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

  • Set up and oversee shipyard repair & maintenance.
  • Facilitate US Coast Guard, ABS & other inspections.
  • Troubleshoot and perform minor repairs to mechanical and electrical equipment.
  • Train boat crew members on repair and maintenance activities that are assigned to them.
  • Conduct periodic boat inspections, report all findings and work to resolve all issues in a timely, efficient and effective manner.
  • Help with construction of new boats by participating in shipyard inspection visits, overseeing machinery commissioning, training crew members, etc.
  • Communicate effectively with the maintenance planners and administrators to make sure that all work is thoroughly and correctly entered into the management information system.
  • Participate in periodic weekend and holiday on-call rotation for boat maintenance department, also assuming the communication duties of the maintenance planners while on-call.
  • When assigned to major/extended repair jobs, assume the following project management duties: survey boat and compile comprehensive work lists, help to prepare cost projections, coordinate and schedule work by the shipyard and other vendors, manage all work effectively to stay on schedule and under budget.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Must be able to read, write and speak clearly in the English language.
  • High School diploma or GED and good mechanical aptitude required.
  • Five (5) plus years of commercial marine repair and maintenance experience; experience managing repair jobs at shipyards also desirable.
  • Electrical experience a plus. 
  • General knowledge of steel hull construction and repair, mechanical equipment (pumps, diesel engines, compressors, etc.) and electrical equipment (generators, switchgear, motors, etc.).
  • Knowledge of a variety of computer software applications, including but not limited to Microsoft Outlook, Excel and Word. 

LANGUAGE SKILLS                                                     

Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations.  Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals.  Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, customers, and the general public.

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS                                             

Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations.

REASONING ABILITY                                                  

Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions. Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables.

TRAVEL REQUIREMENTS:

Travel sixty to eighty days per year by automobile, airplane, and by boat. 

This position requires driving a vehicle as necessary for errands and business related meetings. Employee and/or applicant must successfully complete a Motor Vehicle History check and possess and maintain a current valid driver's license in their state of residence.
