The Position:

Boarding Staff play a vital role in fostering a supportive and engaging experience for boarding students. They ensure students' individual needs, strengths, and talents are recognized and nurtured while providing academic and social-emotional guidance. With an understanding of adolescent development, Boarding Staff offer emotional and social support within a structured and safe boarding environment.

Boarding Staff report to the Head of Boarding and work collaboratively with other boarding team members to provide comprehensive care and ensure student well-being. They work closely with the Health Centre and faculty to provide a supportive and caring environment for all boarding students.

Boarding Staff are required to live on campus during the school year. They must be able to commit to working a rotating schedule of day, evening, overnight and weekend shifts.

Specific Accountabilities:

  • Ensure that students' overall needs are met by actively monitoring and supporting their physical health, mental well-being, social development, behavior, and emotional resilience. This includes facilitating access to health services, promoting positive social interactions, implementing behavior management strategies, and providing emotional support through active listening, mentorship, and intervention when necessary.
  • Supervise evening study.
  • Support and implement boarding programming.
  • Lead and mentor a boarding advisory group.
  • Organize and facilitate activities for student both on and off campus.
  • Communicates effectively with parents, teachers, and student support and faculty as needed.
  • Maintains professional accountability, boundaries, responsibility and model appropriate behaviour.
  • Establish boarding expectations aligned with the Code of Conduct, school handbooks and other school policies for students and carry out disciplinary measures when necessary.
  • Manage and maintain the Boarding School to ensure a safe, secure and clean environment by conducting regular inspections and completing duties necessary to the smooth functioning of the Boarding School.
  • Coordinate safety checks and oversee adherence to regulations in accordance with the School Emergency Procedures.
  • Maintain confidentiality of sensitive issues and materials.
  • Support a program/activity in the day school i.e., academics, athletics, performing arts or other clubs.
  • Contribute to maintaining an environment of inclusion in accordance with the School’s shared values of respect, teamwork and collaboration.
  • Any other responsibilities, in a variety of circumstances, as required by the Head of Boarding School and the Assistant Head of Boarding.

Qualifications, Knowledge and Experience

  • 3 + years of recent relevant education and/or experience, ideally in Education, Recreation and Health, or youth care settings.
  • Certificate, Diploma, or Degree in education or youth care related field.
  • Experience working within a diverse team.
  • Experience supporting students with diverse backgrounds and identities.
  • Current First Aid/CPR certification; CPR Level “C” with AED is an asset.
  • Ability to successfully obtain Vulnerable Sector Screening (VSS) criminal record check clearance.
  • Must be able to work evening, overnight and weekend shifts as part of a work schedule.
  • Experience working in a boarding school setting/ living and working in a dorm.
  • Understanding of the developmental stages of adolescents including their health and wellbeing needs.
  • Key competencies and emotional intelligence in self-awareness, self-management, empathy, initiative and accountability.
  • Ability to assess daily operations and make good judgement decisions and recommendations based on the values of the school.
  • Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written.
  • Commitment to dealing effectively with conflict and managing interpersonal relationships in a timely and professional manner.
  • Comfortable with general computer skills.
  • Excellent organizational skills.
  • Ability to work independently as well as collaborate in a team environment.
  • Supporter of academic initiatives and co-curricular activities for students.
  • Actively support the vision, mission and values of our school.
  • Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion training is an asset.
  • Mental Health First Aid is an asset.
  • Fluency in a second language is an asset.
