As a Body Shop Metal Technician you will be responsible for performing automotive repairs and service as assigned in accordance with manufacturer and insurance standards.

 

Essential Duties And Responsibilities

 

·         Perform work as outlined on repair orders.

·         Examine damaged vehicles to estimate repair procedures.

·         Complete work in accordance with applicable safety requirements.

·         Conduct parts inventory for collision repairs to ensure accuracy.

·         Monitor the progress of vehicle repairs to determine the schedule for final assembly.

·         Complete proper documentation and record keeping on repair orders.

·         Perform proper tool and equipment usage and maintenance.

 

Routine Duties And Responsibilities

 

·         File, grind, sand and smooth ï¬lled or repaired surfaces, using power tools and hand tools.

·         Sand body areas to be painted and cover bumpers, windows, and trim with masking tape or paper to protect them from the paint.

·         Follow supervisors' instructions as to which parts to restore or replace and how much time the job should take.

·         Remove damaged sections of vehicles using metal cutting guns, air grinders and wrenches, and install replacement parts using wrenches or welding equipment.

·         Cut and tape plastic separating ï¬lm to outside repair areas in order to avoid damaging surrounding surfaces during repair procedure, and remove tape and wash surfaces after repairs are complete.

·         Prime and paint repaired surfaces, using paint spray guns and motorized sanders.

·         Inspect repaired vehicles for dimensional accuracy and test drive them to ensure proper alignment and handling.

·         Mix polyester resins and hardeners to be used in restoring damaged areas.

·         Chain or clamp frames and sections to alignment machines that use hydraulic pressure to align damaged components.

·         Fit and weld replacement parts into place, using wrenches and welding equipment, and grind down welds to smooth them, using power grinders and other tools.

·         Position dolly blocks against surfaces of dented areas and beat opposite surfaces to remove dents, using hammers.

·         Remove damaged panels, and identify the family and properties of the plastic used on a vehicle.

·         Review damage reports, prepare or review repair cost estimates, and plan work to be performed.

·         Remove small pits and dimples in body metal using pick hammers and punches.

·         Remove upholstery, accessories, electrical window-and-seat-operating equipment, and trim in order to gain access to vehicle bodies and fenders.

·         Clean work areas, using air hoses, in order to remove damaged material and discarded ï¬berglass strips used in repair procedures.

·         Adjust or align headlights.

·         Apply heat to plastic panels, using hot-air welding guns or immersion in hot water, and press the softened panels back into shape by hand.

·         Soak ï¬berglass matting in resin mixtures, and apply layers of matting over repair areas to speciï¬ed thicknesses.

·         Complies with all laws and regulations pertaining to paint, thinners and other hazardous materials, reports any deviations to management.

·         Advise management of any safety equipment needed to perform task assigned

·         Follow all Standard operating procedures given by shop management

·         Willing to learn New Repair Methods

·         Drive vehicle when needed

·         Operates all tools and equipment in a safe manner

·         Other duties as assigned

 

Supervisory Responsibilities

This position has no supervisory responsibilities.

Qualifications

 

  • 4+ years in body shop repair which provides knowledge and experience in all phases of body repair (structural, light, medium, heavy, welding, repairing, frame and unibody straightening, and analysis of secondary damage).
  • ICAR certified within one year of employment
  • Maintain valid driver's license and MVR within company policy requirements.

 

Education And Experience

 

·         Equivalent to completion of the twelfth school grade &/or Four years of experience learning the auto body repair trade as a helper or apprentice. Any equivalent combination of education and experience determined to be acceptable by the Personnel Department.

 

Language Skills

Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to communicate effectively before groups of customers and employees of organization. Ability to follow complex instructions.

 

Reasoning Ability

Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.

 

Physical Demands

 

BODY POSITIONS:  Includes sitting, standing, walking and use of hands and arms to operate office equipment. Must be able to see (20/20 vision with glasses) and hear (with mechanical assistance if necessary) sufficient to understand and comprehend individual one-on-one conversations.

 

BODY SENSES:  Must have command of the senses of sight, hearing and touch.  Specific vision abilities required include close vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.  These vision requirements in each area must be sufficient to shift in focus from computer screens to close forms.

 

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

·         Strength to perform average lifting up to 50 lbs. and occasionally required to lift up to 100 lbs.

·         Regularly required to sit, stand, bend, reach, talk, hear, use hands and fingers, handle or operate objects, tools, or controls.

·         Regularly required to stoop, kneel, and crouch.

·         While performing the duties of this job, the employee is exposed to weather conditions precedent at that time.

·         Required vision include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision and the ability to adjust focus.

·         Required to operate equipment and move vehicles in a safe manner at all times.

·         Must be willing to wear gloves, masks, eye and ear protection.

 

VISION REQUIREMENTS

 

  • Color vision (ability to identify & distinguish colors)

 

Work Environment

 

Work performed in an office and shop settings due to location of customer vehicles. Exposure to shop environment such as noise, dust, odors and fumes, chemicals and adhesives the noise level in the work environment is usually moderate
