Job Description

Personal Care Attendant (Attendant Care)

Reports To:                Home Care/Home Health Office Manager
Hours of Work:         Part-time/Non-Exempt- hours may vary as needed



POSITION SUMMARY: This position helps older adults and person with disabilities who have physical needs remain in their own home and carry out functions of daily living, self-care and mobility by providing hands-on, non-medical personal care assistance in accordance with a personalized Consumer Care Plan.

EXPECTED RESULTS: The efforts of this position should result in at least 98% of those served indicating that:  1.  the Personal Care Attendant arrived on time (punctual), 2. the Personal Care Attendant performed all tasks assigned in the Consumer Care Plan and, 3. They are satisfied with the services provided by the Personal Care Attendant.


ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: include the following: Other duties may be assigned.

 

Service Delivery- In accordance with the consumers care plan Attendant Care Aides:

  • Provide assistance with personal care which can include bathing, partial bathing, oral hygiene, hair care including clipping of hair, shaving, hand and foot care, intact skin care, and application of cosmetics.
  • Provide assistance with mobility which can include proper body mechanics, transfer between bed and chair, and ambulation-not including assistive devices.
  • Provide assistance with elimination which can include assists with bedpan, bedside commode and toilet waste disposal, incontinent or involuntary care, and emptying urine collection and colostomy bags.
  • Provide assistance with nutrition which can include meal planning, preparation, and clean-up.
  • Provide assistance with safety which can include use of the principles of health and safety in relation to self and individual, identification and elimination safety hazards, practice health protection and cleanliness by appropriate techniques of hand washing, waste disposal and household tasks, reminders to client to self-administer medications, providing assistance with correspondence and bill paying, and escorting individuals to community activities that are therapeutic in nature or that assist with developing and maintaining natural supports.                                                    

Public Relations/Marketing

  • Maintain positive relationships with the consumers served, community service agencies, co-workers, and other professionals.       


Administrative and Clerical

  • Make daily entries regarding activities performed for consumers in staff member time sheets.
  • Complete and submit bi-weekly time sheets.

 
Financial

  • Maintain receipts for purchases made on behalf of consumers with consumer funds, as prescribed in the Consumer Care Plan.

 

Planning         

  • Plan daily work activities for assigned consumers within time frames established in the consumer Plan of Care.

 

Personnel        

  • Incumbent does not have any personnel duties.

 

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES: Incumbent does not supervise any staff.

QUALIFICATIONS, REQUIREMENTS and DEMANDS: To perform this job successfully, the individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. Reasonable accommodations will be made to the extent possible that enable qualified individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions. Incumbents must be eighteen years of age, or older. Incumbent must provide proof of a negative TB test result on an annual basis as a condition of employment. Incumbent must successfully complete required quarterly training programs. Incumbents must follow a written Consumer Care Plan that identifies specific service needs of the consumer as determined by the consumer's assessment. Incumbents must have the ability to work alone with minimal supervision. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skills, and/or abilities required.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE: High school diploma, its equivalent, or two (2) years of documented, supervised Attendant Care Aide experience or equivalent.

LANGUAGE SKILLS: Ability to effectively comprehend and follow oral directions and instructions. Ability to read, comprehend and comply with written policies, procedures, and instructions. Ability to effectively communicate verbally with co-workers, supervisors, other providers, and assigned consumers.

 
MATHEMATICAL SKILLS: Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide using whole numbers.

 
REASONING ABILITY: Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions. 

 
PHYSICAL DEMANDS:  While performing the essential functions of this of this job the employee is required to: 1. regularly talk and hear to communicate, 2. regularly use fingers, hands, and arms to manipulate and move objects, 3.  regularly stand, walk, climb, kneel, crouch, reach, push, pull, and bend to function in consumer and community environments, 4. regularly use near and distance vision and, 5. occasionally lift adults of varying adult weights. 

 
EQUIPMENT OPERATION REQUIREMENTS:   Ability to operate residential lawn mowing and snow removal equipment. Ability to operate vacuum cleaner, residential oven, handheld calculator, and washing machine and dryer. Ability to operate blood pressure cuff, residential oven, and handheld calculator. Ability to read a glucometer.

 
TRAVEL REQUIREMENTS: Ability to travel independently: 1. frequently throughout the League's service region and, 2. occasionally in an interstate region.

 
WORKING ENVIRONMENT: While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently exposed to fumes or airborne particles and extreme outside weather conditions while traveling to consumer homes, medical appointments, conducting essential errands, and removing snow.  Noise levels while traveling are usually moderate. Noise levels in the consumer work environment are usually low. Environmental conditions in consumer homes vary from work site to work site and may include conditions such as secondhand smoke, pet dander, and germs, viruses, and bacteria. 

 
WORK SCHEDULE DEMANDS: Be able to work during regular scheduled hours. Must be available evening and weekends as work assignment demands require. Hours may vary as needed.
