Your Role

Assistant Lifeguards are at the heart of our Aquatic Centre and will provide safe, enjoyable aquatic opportunities for the public through the provision of lifeguarding and instructional services. You will be an assistant lifeguard to leisure and recreational swimmers. Prevent injuries through public education and respond appropriately when injuries and incidents do occur. You will be guarding the leisure side of the pool which includes the Family Hot Tub, all Water slides, Lazy River, Leisure Pool, and Spray Park. You will aid a lifeguard if needed on the competition side of the pool. You will answer public inquiries, test and record water sample results, and clean aquatic and change room areas by providing janitorial services appropriate to your role.

Your Responsibilities

Performs preventative assistant lifeguarding duties in accordance with national standards and internal policies and procedures.

Prevents injuries by providing public education and responds appropriately when first aid treatment and/or emergency response/rescue is required.

Monitors the general cleanliness and safety of the aquatic centre area including change rooms and immediately rectifies unclean and/or potentially hazardous conditions in a proactive nature, whenever possible.

Carries out opening and closing procedures appropriately.

Completes reports accurately and in a timely manner.

Organizes and leads games and activities for members and guests.

Sets up, takes down and safely stores equipment and bulkheads according to a prearranged schedule and does so in a timely and cooperative manner.

Provides exceptional service to aquatic centre users.

Conducts routine safety inspections.

Performs wrist band checks.

Will attend all in-service training and monthly skills/fitness challenges.

Establishes and maintains a cooperative/collaborative working relationship with other departments within the RRC through positive actions and communication.

All other duties as assigned.

Qualifications: Education & Experience

Minimum age of 15

Current Intermediate First Aid (Standard First Aid)/CPR C/AED Certificate

Lifesaving Society Bronze Cross (2021 Program).

Qualifications:  Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

Knowledge of Assistant lifeguarding principles and practices.

Knowledge of aquatic instructional programs and evaluation standards.

Thrive in a team environment, enjoy working as a team member as well as independently.

A strong dedication to community service.

Ability to promote water safety and drowning prevention through public education and special events with all facility users.

Ability and willingness to be flexible in a changing work environment.

Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

Ability to recognize and act to resolve potential problems proactively.

Working Conditions

While performing the essential functions of this job, some tasks involve the ability to exert very moderate physical effort, typically involving some combination of standing, standing at a height, sitting, sitting at a height, crouching, walking, climbing, swimming, performing work while wet and/or performing work while wet for extended periods of time.

Emergency tasks and regular staff training events involve the performance of physically demanding work, which may involve some combination of running, climbing and/or swimming and may involve lifting, carrying, pushing and/or pulling heavy objects including distressed persons on land or in the water, performing work while wet and/or performing work while wet for extended periods of time.

Assistant Lifeguards must maintain the ability to demonstrate “Must See” items from the appropriate governing body to the satisfaction of the employer at all times of scheduled employment.

Safe lifting, carrying and rescue techniques and the use of a rescue aid in the water and the coordination of rescue with a second rescuer and a rescue aid in the water, when possible, are required by the employer.

Safe use of employee protective equipment is required by the employer.

This position requires a flexible schedule including statutory holidays, early morning, late night, and weekend work.
