We seek an individual inspired by our mission, whose beliefs align with our core values of integrity, inquiry, compassion and courage, and who reflects our core competencies to join our Upper School as an Assistant Head of Upper School, Senior Division beginning in August 2026.  This is a full-time position.

Salary range: $120,000 to $160,000.  The total compensation for this Assistant Head position is based on placement on the Havergal College faculty grid plus a $20,000 leadership stipend (included in the above salary range).  Grid placement is determined by teaching qualifications and experience up to a maximum of 11 years, and is scheduled to increase for the 2026–2027 academic year. Final placement within the range is based on the successful candidate's credentials and years of experience.

The Position: 

The Assistant Head of Upper School, Senior Division (AHU - Senior Division) works diligently to ensure that each Senior School student is known, valued and cared for and works collaboratively with the Upper School Leadership team (AHU - Middle Division, Director of Boarding, Directors of Guidance, Manager of the Health Centre and Co-Curricular Directors) to create an engaging school environment where students have access to a breadth of opportunities in a community that prioritizes wellbeing, belonging and engagement.

The AHU - Senior Division oversees the progress and development of students in Grades 9-12. They set the direction for the content and delivery of morning programming, including grade-based programming, the House program, and the Teacher Advisor program. The AHU - Senior Division plays a key role in upholding the Code of Conduct and expectations for Senior School students.

This role includes teaching responsibilities.

Specific Accountabilities:

Oversight of the safety, progress and development of Senior School students (Grades 9-12):

  • Upholding the Code of Conduct and maintaining a safe, caring, and inclusive environment in the Senior School with high student expectations.
  • Develop and facilitate onboarding programming (Welcome Week Activities, Grade 9 camp, mentor/buddy program, etc.).
  • Creating meaningful, large group grade experiences that contribute to the goals of the Upper School.
  • Partnering with Guidance Counsellors and Learning Support Specialists in supporting proactive student support strategies and setting guidelines for expectations. Support faculty in their work with students.
  • Review student timetables to best support the student learning experience.
  • Work with parents to create a partnership between home and the Senior School.
  • Work with House Captains and Senior Year Presidents to develop strong community programming and to facilitate partnerships between the administration and student voice and events.
  • Be a presence for the safe and efficient arrival and departure of all Senior School students, and be an active, visible presence in the hallways, grade areas and locker rooms throughout the day.
  • Develop lunchtime routines for Senior School students and faculty supervision schedules.
  • Support procedures and protocols for evacuation and containment-related emergencies, and rehearse them in accordance with legal requirements.

Oversee Morning Programming (Grade Programming, House Programming and the Teacher Advisor program):

  • Create TA class assignments, including faculty assignments.
  • Ensure that students develop trusting relationships with adults and peers in the school community through specific Senior School programming.
  • Oversee the Grade Leads (4) and support their development of strong grade programming that reflects a scope and sequence for wellbeing, EDIB, student leadership, and academic counselling.
  • Oversee the House Program and the House Advisor Team (10), ensuring that it maintains its community and spirited aspects and remains a key component of life at Havergal.
  • Oversee the Teacher-Advisor (TA) program and develop its content through research-based practices that build trust and community.

Collaborative and engaged member of the US Leadership Team:

  • Serve as a committee member of both the US Student Support Team and the US Student Life team, bringing appropriate agenda items to each and passing along appropriate items to team members when needed.
  • Meet regularly with the Head of Upper School to identify student issues related to behaviour and attendance. Address behavioural issues and breaches of the Code of Conduct and ensure the school’s progressive discipline framework is judiciously administered in consultation with the Head of Upper School.
  • Annually contribute to the review and revision of the content of the Family Handbook and Veracross Portals relating to the Senior School.
  • Manage related Senior School budgets

Qualifications, Knowledge and Experience

  • Qualified candidates will ideally have a minimum of 5 years of teaching experience, plus demonstrated leadership in curriculum, student life programming, or school operations.
  • Deep understanding of the developmental and relational learning needs of Senior School students.
  • Familiarity with the priorities and contemporary approaches within a girls' school.
  • Sound professional judgement and excellent problem-solving ability.
  • Demonstrated leadership skills with the ability to develop teams and be an effective team player.
  • Demonstrated initiative in programming and a proactive, inquiry stance in dealing with students, parents and faculty.
  • Administrative and teaching experience in the Senior School grades.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills – approachable and open, with the proven ability to work collaboratively with others and a proactive approach with all constituents.
  • Excellent organizational and technology skills.
  • Excellent communication skills – written and oral, in a timely and effective manner.
  • Excellent time-management and prioritization skills with the ability to multitask and work well under pressure, think strategically and operationally and work independently.
  • Skillful planning, detailed project management and resourcefulness.
  • Leadership qualifications are an asset.
