Assistant Head of Junior School
We seek an individual inspired by our mission, whose beliefs align with our core values of integrity, inquiry, compassion and courage, and who reflects our core competencies to join our Junior School as an Assistant Head of Junior School, beginning in August 2026. This is a full-time position.
Salary range: $120,000 to $160,000. The total compensation for this Assistant Head position is based on placement on the Havergal College faculty grid plus a $20,000 leadership stipend (included in the salary range above). Grid placement is determined by teaching qualifications and experience up to a maximum of 11 years, and is scheduled to increase for the 2026–2027 academic year. Final placement within the range is based on the successful candidate's credentials and years of experience.

The Position:
The Assistant Head of Junior School (AH-JS) works diligently to ensure that each Junior School student is known, valued and cared for. They collaborate with all stakeholders to create a school environment where students have access to a broad range of opportunities within a community that prioritizes wellbeing, belonging, and engagement.
The Assistant Head of the Junior School is accountable for the smooth day-to-day operations of the Junior School, including coordinating operational and communication processes, developing duty schedules, special schedules, and class coverage procedures, overseeing afterschool care staff and programs, and planning major Junior School events. The role also ensures a rich and inclusive student life experience by overseeing Junior School co-curricular programming, including clubs, leadership development, and partnerships with Havergal’s Community Partners, while playing a key role in upholding the Junior School Code of Conduct and student expectations.
Specific Accountabilities:
Support the Junior School through actions that demonstrate:
- A collegial and collaborative approach to delivering the administrative functions of the Junior School.
- Keeping accurate records, including ensuring student information is accurately recorded, faculty coverage information is up to date, and the regular review of faculty and student absences.
- Modelling a friendly, respectful, consistent, and energetic school environment that develops an ethos of care, and the development of nurturing and supportive relationships.
- A commitment to being present and accessible to students, faculty, staff, and families.
- An understanding of “whole school” operational and strategic priorities, and the place of the Junior School within this.
Oversight of Day-to-Day Operations of the Junior School, that prioritize safety and student learning through the:
- Efficient arrival and dismissal procedures and practices for students.
- Appropriate duty, on-call, and special schedules for faculty.
- Development of procedures and protocols for evacuation and containment-related emergencies, including scheduling of practice drills throughout the year.
- Clear guidelines and procedures for faculty coverage, to be managed by the Junior School Office.
- Writing the weekly faculty operational memo and leading the weekly faculty “huddle.”
- Overseeing the Before and After Care Program (“Gator Care”); management of staff (including “Gator Care Supervisors/Upper School Student Workers), budget, and ensuring programming is safe, engaging and fun for students ages 3 – 12.
- Oversight of the planning and coordination of JS Events (e.g., Harvest Festival, Christmas Concert, Grade 6 Leaving Ceremony, JS Closing).
Oversight of Junior School Student Life, including:
- Developing and implementing a Grade 4, 5 & 6 Leadership Program; aligning the program with the school’s Leadership Attributes and overall scope and sequence.
- The continued development of community service programming for Junior School students with Havergal’s community partners.
- Planning a rich and diverse co-curricular program, including clubs, athletics and arts programming.
- Working collaboratively with the Junior School Office Administrators to coordinate with outside co-curricular providers and set up registration for parents.
- Mentoring Junior School Prefects from the Upper School, to develop mentoring relationships with Junior School students through activities and programs throughout the year.
- Addressing minor student behaviour issues in a timely and consistent manner, including communicating with faculty, families, and the Head of Junior School and ensuring that processes are aligned with the Code of Conduct, using a progressive discipline approach.
Act as a Direct Report to:
- Gator Care Supervisors (after-school care) and Internal Supply Coverage Providers.
Qualifications, Knowledge and Experience
- Qualified candidates will ideally have a minimum of 5 years of teaching experience, plus demonstrated leadership in curriculum, student life programming, or school operations.
- Deep understanding of the developmental and relational learning needs of students in JK - Grade 6.
- Familiarity with the priorities and contemporary approaches within a girls' school.
- Sound professional judgement, flexibility, and excellent problem-solving ability.
- Demonstrated leadership skills with the ability to develop teams and be an effective team player.
- Demonstrated initiative in programming and a proactive, inquiry stance in dealing with students, parents and faculty.
- Excellent interpersonal skills – approachable and open, with the proven ability to work collaboratively with others and a proactive approach with all constituents.
- Excellent organizational and technology skills.
- Excellent communication skills – written and oral, in a timely and effective manner.
- Excellent time-management and prioritization skills with the ability to multitask and work well under pressure, think strategically and operationally and work independently.
- Skillful planning, detailed project management and resourcefulness.
- Leadership qualifications (PQP, or CAIS Leadership Qualifications are an asset).
