We are currently recruiting versatile, adventure seeking a Carpenter for a seasonal position from June to September in Churchill with Frontiers North!

JOB SUMMARY

The Carpenter – Construction and Maintenance (Carpenter) is responsible for carrying out skilled and semi-skilled tasks related to the construction, maintenance, and repair of Frontiers North Inc. (Frontiers North) facilities and staff housing in Churchill, Manitoba. Reporting directly to the Property Maintenance Manager, this position plays a key role in ensuring that infrastructure is safe, functional, and built to code. The role requires a strong ability to work independently in a remote setting, coordinate effectively with other trades when needed, and maintain a high standard of safety and quality of work.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Perform carpentry, renovation, and maintenance tasks to complete work orders for construction, maintenance, and/or repair of Frontiers North staff houses and facilities.
  • Interpret plans, diagrams, blueprints, sketches, and specifications.
  • Create project plans for assigned work, assessing time, materials, and equipment requirements.
  • Estimate material needs based on drawings, blueprints, and/or written instructions.
  • Monitor inventory levels of materials and equipment and notify the Maintenance Manager of needs.
  • Operate a variety of specialized equipment, including saws, drills, presses, and various hand and power tools.
  • Ensure compliance with the Manitoba Building Code, Manitoba Workplace Safety and Health Act and Regulations, and other applicable legislation.
  • Coordinate work with other trades as required to complete projects effectively.
  • Communicate with the Property Maintenance Manager, coworkers, and external parties as needed to exchange information and resolve issues.
  • Assist in post-construction inspections, project planning, and evaluation.
  • Perform regular maintenance on shop equipment and tools.

Workplace Health and Safety

  • Follow the Workplace Safety and Health Act and Regulation standards and protocols and all Frontiers North health and safety policies and procedures, including the use of personal protective equipment (PPE) when necessary.
  • Follow all instructions and manufacturers recommendations when using hand and power tools and construction machinery and equipment.
  • Document all hazards and safety incidents and keep accurate safety records as needed.   
  • Attend all safety meetings as required.
  • Ensure the work area is clean, sanitary, well-organized, and hazard free.

SPECIFIC KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

  • Completion of a carpentry apprenticeship program, and/or Red Seal/Journeyperson Certification, or an acceptable combination of education and experience. 
  • 5+ years’ experience in carpentry and general construction, including residential work and commercial building maintenance or upgrades. 
  • Valid Class 5 (standard) driver’s license is required.
  • The ability to obtain a valid Class 4 license (buses up to 24 passengers) is required; possession of a valid Class 4 licence is an asset. 
  • Excellent carpentry and general construction skills including drywall, paint, and minor plumbing and electrical.
  • Ability to read and interpret blueprints and technical specifications.
  • Ability to estimate labour and material needs and costs.
  • Knowledge of the Manitoba Building Code and the Manitoba Workplace Safety and Health Act and Regulations as they pertain to the residential construction industry is required. 
  • Strong ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills to collaborate effectively across departments and with diverse coworkers.
  • Demonstrated problem-solving skills and the ability to adapt to changing priorities and respond to a variety of maintenance needs in a dynamic, remote environment.
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills in English; other languages are an asset.
  • Proficiency using computers including Mac operating systems, Google Workspace, Microsoft Office, Internet, and server databases.

SPECIAL CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT

  • This job is based in Churchill, Manitoba, a remote northern community accessible only by train and plane.
  • Work environment includes indoor and outdoor settings, sometimes in extreme weather conditions.
  • Requires working with hand and power tools, mechanical equipment, and large vehicles. 
  • Ability to perform physically demanding tasks, including safely lifting up to 50 pounds (22.68 kilograms), standing for extended periods of times, bending at the waist, crouching and kneeling, reaching overhead, safely climbing a ladder, walking over uneven surfaces, and working at heights and in confined spaces. 
  • Must remain free of impairment from drugs, alcohol, or other mental and physical conditions (fit for duty) while on duty and/or on call to work.
  • Tools will be provided. 
  • CSA approved, steel-toed work boots with ankle protection are required to be worn while on job sites.
  • Overtime may be required during evenings, weekends, and on holidays, especially during peak seasons.
  • Must be legally entitled to work in Canada.
