Job description – Assistant Director of Engineering

 

The Assistant Director of Engineering job description includes managing engineering teams, developing and executing engineering strategies, overseeing project lifecycles, and managing budgets and resources. Key responsibilities also involve fostering a culture of innovation, collaborating with other departments, ensuring quality and compliance, and mentoring and developing staff. 

The Assistant Director of Engineering, oversees the strategic direction, operational performance, and team leadership of an organization's engineering department. They are responsible for aligning technology strategy with overall company goals and managing the people and processes that drive technical execution. The specific duties and required experience can vary significantly based on the company's size and industry focus, such as software, hardware, or research and development. 

Key responsibilities:

  • Strategic leadership and planning: Develop and execute the long-term engineering strategy, including the technical roadmap and technology stack. This involves interpreting company goals and translating them into actionable engineering initiatives.
  • Operational oversight: Manage the day-to-day operations of the engineering department, ensuring projects are completed on time, within budget, and to a high standard of quality. This includes tracking key metrics for team performance and delivery.
  • Team management and mentorship: Lead, mentor, and grow multiple engineering teams and managers. The Director cultivates a culture of collaboration, innovation, and continuous improvement while also handling hiring, performance reviews, and career development.
  • Resource and budget management: Control the engineering department's budget and allocate resources like personnel, equipment, and tools to meet project demands and optimize outcomes.
  • Cross-functional collaboration: Act as a critical link between the engineering department and other business units, such as product management, design, sales, and marketing. They ensure that technical capabilities meet overall business and market needs.
  • Innovation and research: Drive innovation by exploring and implementing new technologies and methodologies, and oversee research and development efforts.
  • Inspect the hotel regularly to ensure safety standards are met
  • Work directly with the Home Owners' Department
  • Arrange for routine maintenance in hotel rooms, lobbies, and facilities
  • Manage relationships with contractors and service providers
  • Respond and coordinate responses to guest calls and emergencies
  • Perform various maintenance repairs in HVAC, electrical, plumbing, drywall/ wallpaper, painting, building exteriors, and appliances
  • Perform maintenance and repairs with a minimum of guest disturbance
  • Ensure completion of all work orders in a timely and detailed manner per company program standards
  • Execution of scheduled preventative maintenance
  • Maintain all storage areas and work spaces in a clean, safe, and secure manner
  • Lead maintenance department in order to manage competing priorities and deadlines
  • Interview, train, and supervise staff
  • Follow all company safety and security policies and procedures; report any maintenance problems/safety hazards

Essential qualifications and skills:

  • Education: High school diploma or equivalent; degree from a vocational school or BS/BA in Facility Management is preferred/ Certified Professional Maintenance Manager (CPMM) is a plus
  • Experience: Requires extensive experience in an engineering role, often 10+ years, with a proven track record of managing complex projects. Prior experience in a management role, like Engineering Manager, is essential.
  • Technical expertise: A deep understanding of engineering principles and a relevant technical background are necessary to guide teams and make sound architectural decisions Knowledge of plumbing, electrical, sewer, wall repair, appliances, and HVAC system
  • Leadership abilities: Strong leadership, communication, and team-building skills are critical for motivating and inspiring a high-performing team.
  • Strategic mindset: The ability to think strategically and align departmental goals with overall business objectives.
  • Problem-solving: Excellent analytical and critical-thinking skills to address and resolve complex technical and operational challenges.
  • Project management: Exceptional project management capabilities to ensure efficient execution and delivery
  • Valid Driver’s License
  • Available to work a flexible schedule including weekends and holidays
