Animal Flow Specialist – Full Time

Calgary, AB Full-time

Monday to Friday | 37.5 hours per week  

Reporting to the Director of Community Services & Pathway Planning, the Animal Flow Specialist ensures every animal entering Calgary Humane Society moves through the shelter with clarity, purpose, and compassion. This role actively supports teams in carrying out individualized plans, removes barriers to progress, and keeps communication flowing so that every animal receives timely care, treatment, enrichment, and support.

You will be the connector - coordinating across departments, monitoring movement through the shelter, and working alongside operational teams to ensure animals move efficiently toward positive outcomes.

Responsibilities:

Pathway Planning & Coordination:

·         Develop clear, measurable pathway plans for every animal, outlining required actions, timelines, and responsible teams.

·         Work closely with operational teams to ensure plans are followed and proactively adjust when delays or barriers arise.

·         Maintain strong communication across all departments so that staff and volunteers understand each animal’s status, needs, and next steps.

 

Rounds & Animal Movement:

·         Lead the daily/weekly rounds process to identify priorities, assign actionable next steps, and ensure timely follow‑through.

·         Support the Communications, Adoption, and Foster teams by identifying animals ready for promotion, placement, or targeted outreach.

 

Capacity & Population Management:

·         Maintain real-time awareness of shelter population levels and capacity constraints, taking steps to help mitigate bottlenecks or crisis points.

·         Forecast population trends using pathway data and share insights that support operational planning.

 

Volunteer & Public Support:

·         Collaborate with the Volunteer Team to create meaningful roles that support animal progress and enrich volunteer engagement.

·         Work with Adoption and Foster teams to facilitate timely movement, improve public experience, and support successful placements.

 

Monitoring & Reporting:

·         Proactively monitor length of stay and pathway adherence, flag concerns early, and collaborate on solutions.

·         Generate insights and data that support leadership decision-making and continuous improvement initiatives.

 

Position Requirements:

·         Minimum high school diploma.

·         2+ years of experience in animal sheltering or a related field.

·         Experience coordinating cross‑functional workflows.

·         Knowledge of animal welfare principles and force‑free handling.

·         Strong communication skills with the ability to navigate competing priorities. 

·         Proficiency in Microsoft 365 and shelter database systems. 

·         Strong communication, analytical, and decisionmaking skills. 

·         Skilled at providing clear expectations and following up to drive task completion. 

·         Valid Class 5 driver’s license and clean abstract. 

·         Successful candidate will be required to provide a criminal record check at their own expense, to be arranged by CHS. 

·         Flexibility for occasional evenings, weekends, and holidays.

Physical Requirements:

·         Comfortable and capable of handling a variety of species (e.g., cats, dogs, rabbits, birds, reptiles, rodents).

·         Ability to lift up to 50 lbs.

·         Ability to perform repetitive motions of sitting, standing, reaching, lifting, squatting, bending, walking, and pulling.
