Main Street Project (MSP) is a community health Centre with a mandate to address the social determinants of health which give rise to issues of addiction, physical and mental health issues and homelessness. MSP uses housing-first and harm reduction principles in the provision of a safe, respectful and accessible place for individuals who are experiencing homelessness or at risk of homelessness in the community. Job Summary

Reporting to the Food and Nutrition Program Manager, the Food Services Coordinator provides operational and management support to all Food Services employees and volunteers while maintaining the core values of MSP regarding harm reduction, choice, equity, and diversity to encourage individuals’ capacity building.

Duties and Responsibilities
Operational Duties:
  • Coordinate the operations of the Main Street Project Food Program
  • Take the lead in managing food donations including packaging, storage and labelling requirements to ensure food safety; determine how food will be transported throughout the agency as well as help pickup and delivery when required
  • Oversee the setup, merchandising and operating (including pick-up and distribution) of Essentials Market
  • Understand and appropriately navigate various issues related to food security
  • Maintain the organization of the Essentials Market storage room and office
  • Assist coordinating food and nutrition management activities, which may include proving food to clients, functions/events and MSP’s Essentials Market
  • Support the Program Manager / Director in the implementation of new policies and procedures
  • Help with food production, food donations and nutritional care to ensure a high standard of quality
  • Collaborate with maintenance of food inventory system, including shipping, receiving and distribution
  • Maintain sanitation standards in compliance with regulatory and public health guidelines.
  • Participate in multidisciplinary team meetings, providing relevant participant information
  • Ensure employees follow safe work practices and MSP standard operating procedures
  • Address community member complaints or concerns; keep the program manager up to date on all community member interactions 
  • Disposal of all cardboard boxes/packing materials after the deliveries have been stored
  • Assist in receiving and organizing Winnipeg Harvest and other food deliveries
  • Maintain Manitoba Harvest client list per requirements
  • Oversee the cleaning and organizing of all areas for storing food and goods
  • Maintain partnerships with other community agencies to distribute any surplus donations 
  • Direct other MSP donations that come through 661 to appropriate locations
  • Participate in donation drives (e.g. bottled water, coffee)
  • Ensure a system for monitoring expiry dates of all food supplies
  • Create and or update inventory lists
  • Provide client information around healthy eating, eating on a budget, and food resources such as Harvest
  • Perform other duties as assigned

Leadership Duties:

  • Oversee and provide direction to Food Services staff and volunteers in their day-to-day duties
  • Provide support to management in policy and procedure adherence
  • Communicate organizational updates with employees as needed, answer queries and provide information as needed. 
  • Monitor ongoing work, identify problems and make recommendations for continuous improvements of procedures and policies
  • Responsible for employee and volunteer performance management; keeping the Program Manager up to date on staff performance
  • Collaborate with the Volunteer Coordinator in the onboarding, training and coaching of volunteers; develop schedules, job descriptions, and detailed task lists for volunteers
  • Lead team debrief after incidents
  • Communicate on a regular basis with the Program Manger on any staffing / scheduling issues or concerns
  • Build a welcoming, safe, inclusive, and positive work environment
  • Provide coverage for Program Manager as required with support from Director


Qualifications

  • Extensive knowledge of food shelf life and Manitoba health guidelines
  • Minimum 3 years’ related experience required or a combination of experience and training in food services will be considered. 
  • Food Handler Certificate required.
  • Ability to meet the physical requirements of the role including lifting up to 50 lbs and standing and/or walking long periods of time.
  • Ability to manage, direct and train new employees 
  • Ability to work with minimal supervision and exercise good judgement.
  • Responsible for workload management and for organizing daily work, prioritizing tasks, to ensure responsibilities are adequately met.
  • Effective communication skills, both verbal and written.
  • Proficient computer skills including Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, and Outlook).
  • Ability to work with a client-centered care philosophy
  • Ability to assess crisis and work in a crisis 
  • Ability to communicate and work effectively in a multidisciplinary team 
  • Subscribe to the philosophy of cooperation and continuity across programs, and of consideration and respect for participants 
  • Knowledge of Indigenous culture 
  • Knowledge of the effects of poverty and the determinants of health 
  • Ability to work effectively with community member with complex needs
  • Demonstrated ability to apply Harm Reduction and Housing First philosophies in their day-to-day support of participants 
  • Ability to work flexible hours to meet program needs.

Additional Requirements

  • Valid Driver’s license is required. 
  • Satisfactory Criminal Record Check with Clear Vulnerable Sector Search and Clear Adult Abuse Registry Check required as a condition of employment
