Brookline Sprouts and Tree of Life Open Bible Church are seeking a passionate and skilled Preschool and Afterschool Chef to create nutritious, family-style meals that bring joy to children and staff. The chef will play a vital role in overseeing all aspects of the meal service program, fostering a warm and supportive environment by preparing delicious meals, maintaining a clean and safe kitchen, and adhering to all nutritional and safety guidelines. Role ResponsibilitiesMeal Planning and Preparation
  • Oversee all aspects of the meal service program to ensure smooth operation and high-quality outcomes.
  • Plan, post, and follow child-friendly menus that are nutritionally balanced, making substitutions as needed.
  • Prepare meals in proper portions, ensuring food is plated attractively, at the right temperature, and on time.
  • Minimize waste during preparation by accurately estimating quantities and following first-in, first-out inventory practices.
  • Include children’s preferences while meeting state and federal nutritional standards.
  • Coordinate ordering and pickup of additional food supplies outside of monthly deliveries to meet program needs.
Kitchen Maintenance and Safety
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and safe kitchen environment by washing dishes, sanitizing equipment, and storing supplies correctly.
  • Adhere to all local health and safety regulations, including proper food handling and allergy awareness.
  • Keep equipment in good working order and notify the administration of any repair needs.
  • Ensure meals are prepared and served without cross-contamination of restricted or allergenic foods.
Team Collaboration and Communication
  • Work harmoniously with teachers and staff to coordinate meal times and special dietary needs.
  • Communicate with vendors and complete food orders within budget.
  • Share updates or adjustments to menus and inventory on organizational platforms (e.g., Slack).
  • Effectively use technology for menu planning, documentation, and communication.
Documentation and Compliance
  • Maintain accurate records of meals, snacks, and attendance in compliance with USDA guidelines.
  • Add all recipes to the designated Recipe Book, including serving sizes and food type portions.
  • Create and maintain a database of CN labels for processed foods.
  • Process food deliveries and maintain an organized inventory of supplies.
  • Keep thorough documentation for inspections and audits to ensure program compliance.
Child-Centered Support
  • Ensure meal preparation aligns with the developmental needs of children, creating a positive mealtime experience.
  • Assist in classrooms as needed, fostering a sense of community and teamwork.
Additional Responsibilities
  • Participate in inspections and audits with a welcoming, professional attitude.
  • Offer creative solutions to unexpected menu challenges or shortages.
  • Make proactive menu changes as needed without disrupting meal times.
  • Contribute to a culture of care, excellence, and happiness for children, families, and staff.
Qualifications
  • Education: High School Diploma or GED required; culinary or childcare-related coursework preferred.
  • Experience: Relevant experience in a childcare kitchen, commercial kitchen, or similar setting.
  • Certifications: Current ServSafe Manager Credential and knowledge of USDA, CACFP, and Feeding America programs.
  • Skills: Strong organizational skills, attention to detail, adaptability, and proficiency with technology for inventory and communication.
  • Physical Requirements:
    • Ability to lift and carry up to 40 pounds.
    • Comfortable standing, walking, and reaching throughout shifts.
    • Demonstrates mental and physical resilience to meet the demands of a dynamic work environment.
