The Purchasing Specialist is responsible for managing all functions related to purchasing including creating purchase orders, utilizing Outworks, and inventory management. The Purchasing Specialist is expected to effectively interact with all departments as well as actively communicate with CMI vendors on a frequent basis.


At a minimum, the following is a basic description of typical duties and responsibilities expected of the Purchasing Specialist. These duties are not exhaustive and are subject to change as the needs of the organization require. 


  • Create Purchase Orders and Outworks orders as required to support the Sales Department.
  • Review and analyze inventory for targeted industries and customer contracts. Make recommendations for purchase. 
  • Actively manage the open purchase order report, which indicates due dates required by CMI. 
  • Contact vendors via phone or email regarding RFQs and Open-Order Status.
  • Check order acknowledgements from mills for accuracy.
  • Update CMI inventory system, if necessary, upon receipt of an acceptable ship date from the vendor.
  • Communicate effectively with sales representative, co-workers, and management.
  • Assist the General Manager in other functions deemed necessary to effectively manage purchasing tasks.
  • Contribute to a positive work environment based on teamwork and continuous improvement.
  • Adhere to all CMI safety rules, regulations, and quality standards.
  • Adhere to all CMI handbook policies and procedures.
